@nippit:
Have you ever sent SMS messages to multiple recipients? Even in normal usage, I do not like waiting 3 seconds for a simple SMS to be sent... SMS over GPRS increases speed and decreases bandwidth usage. And yes, no operator can disable normal SMS since not all phones support SMS over GPRS!!!
Anyone knows which UK operators support SMS over GPRS?

Ok maybe I'm being a little picky... but 3seconds? You can't wait for just 3 seconds?
Soon your be saying sending an email or mms from your phone via gprs is too slow.
I can understand your point, if it was taking half a minute or something but 3 seconds...
And why do you care about bandwidth usage? If the network is getting choked then its the SP that has to worry not its subscribers...
Sorry rant over, it was the 3 seconds that got me.

Well, 3 seconds is too much once you get used to less then half a second! (and mostly when you start sending grouped messages) Also, my operator bills me half the normal SMS price when I use GPRS for sending SMS!! (quite logically, indeed)
Also, bandwidth usage becomes important in situations with high network usage: like bombings, new year, ...
And still you did not tell me which operators in the UK supports SMS over GPRS

Same problem here! I've come to the conclusion that orange's customer and network services, coverage bre miles ahead of O2. You get what you pay for though, Orange was alot more expensive!

Someone mentioned mobisms and no one picked up on it. Does this mean noone has given it a go yet. If not are there any reliable sms providers offering the same service?

The old saying "you don't get owt for nowt" is in effect here, meaning that you don't get anything without paying for it. You won't get a reliable free SMS solution for GPRS that lasts forever and always works because it's just not possible to run something like that for free for a long time - as soon as people start using it and see that it's good they recommend it to their friends, who in turn recommend it to their friends and so on. Sooner or later your GPRS SMS gateway will just die due to overuse, high costs, etc.
To be honest, I don't pay for my SMS anyway and I can live with waiting a few seconds for them to be sent. I'd rather O2 actually installed a mast somewhere in my area, as there's a whole half-mile radius round my house where it's virtually impossible to get a signal. I emailed them saying that it's not acceptable and they said they have plans to upgrade the network - the signal has been this way for over five years so I don't think it's a high priority! |
