So which of the UK networks is the best, in your opinion?

What no mention of '3' ?!?
Ive been on orange for 6-7 years and have recently bought my '3' handset. I've found 3 OK so far, but there was no 3g signal in wiltshire when I went there, but that is to be expected. Orange and the other networks will blow '3' away with their 3g services.
3 are to agressive with pricing, and no matter how many minutes you give some1, if the service isnt there, it wont work. Plus their walled garden approach to wap/internet and handset software is worse than anything orange & voda can do. Imagine orange only allowing you to read orangeworld or voda just letting you see vodalive. Its bad enough with all the branding on the menu.

I can well imagine that 3 will abandon the 'walled garden' approach when the other networks release their 3G services, at the moment it wouldn't make financial sense for 3 to allow customers to access contecnt besides its own.
I'm interested to know why 3 is going to be 'blown out of the water', is there something in the pipeline?

To be fair, there really isn't much between the four main UK networks these days. All the networks will probably have areas where they have poorer coverage which the others don't and as for the price plans, I can't really find much that is different. Before someone posts a full list of price plans I should say that I am speaking in a general context i.e. one's mobile bill is unlikely to become significantly cheaper if one switches between the four main UK networks and maintains the same usage patterns.

Unless youre looking for a data only tariff, which vodafone do not offer apparently. O2 offer the data 5 tariff at £8 monthly, whereas Vodafone's cheapest monthly tariff is about £14.

In my opinion 3's marketing is backwards, as it is aimed at high voice users. Whats the point in having a high speed network (think mobile data here) and not market a data card for laptop users, but push voice minutes.
They do not appear to attract businesses for data etc and make use of their network. . I understand the need to re-coup their set up fees (which will take 5 years at least). But who do they employee, monkies?
And of course 3 will make money from external internet web & wap sites. Look at all the chargeable stuff around now that gets added to ur bill or deducted from your credit They probably don't have this in place yet as when I access 3 wap/internet there is no charge for the connection.
I expect 3 to go bust unless hutchinson keep throwing money at them

I fully agree with you that 3 will be bale to make money from customers accessing services outside of the 'walled garden', it's just that with no other 3G network in the UK catering for personal use, as opposed to business users, they can effectively keep their customers within the 'garden' and charge them high prices for their services.
I can envisage what may happen when the other networks launch their full range of 3G services; 3 will no doubt allow its customers out of the 'garden' whilst reducing the price of its own services so as to make them more appealing in a more competitive environment. I would also imagine that 3 will eventually implement some business plans, they would be insane not to and has been said already it is rather perplexing why they haven't done more to cater to business users, who make a sizeable share of the mobile phone market.
The main problem 3 face is that their network coverage isn't as good as we have come to expect from GSM networks and people find this very off-putting and annoying when trying to make a phone call. We must also remember that 3 have an extremely small range of handsets on offer in comparison to the other networks; this is further compounded by the fact that the majority of these handsets are not all that good for various reasons.
I don't think 3 will go bust, but thy will certainly face a very tough battle when the other networks have released their 3G services.

Thank you all for some interesting thoughts.
My first mobile was on BT Cellnet (I think sold to O2) and I think they have the best signal. I live in London and they were the only network who had 'strong' signal in some underground stations. Anyway that was my PAYG.
I'm on Orange at the mo and I think they have been really good. Service and signal have been top, but I think I can get a better deal especially as most of my friends are on T-mobile and they want me to migrate. They tell me its good.
I thought Id get some opinions from other users about their reliability.
