ok ive put a old hd in and installed xo on it.. i tryed formatting it from windows (the 40gig one) and i put i made it ntfs by formatting thrue windows but its still 1.99gig... do i need to do it form dos? also with my old 1 i put in i formatteed it then installed win98 then installed xp.. and its file sysdtem is fat32.. how do i make it ntfs and how do i install xp without installing 98 first because i have the full version of xp not just the upgrade version..

Dear Lord, what are you all talking about? Boot xp, press windows+r, type discmgmt.msc! That is a cool built-in utility for partitioning and formatting!

Dont know if you allready tryed that

Go to the Bios set the first boot device as the CDrom, the other boot device you set them on none or HDD-0. Place the WinXP cd, reboot the computer, wait a bit until you get a message "press any key to boot from cd" ( or something like that ), wait a little bit, do not press on the F ( F1-F2-F3-...) keys, just wait until you come to a "installation" screen ... install windows, it will ask on wich partition, you delete any partition you can find, make a new one, go to next step of installing Windows, format the HD in ntfs, after that it will install XP and voila ( well normaly )

thx for ur help.. i used that disc managment thing and got my 40gig hd workin, but my 60gig hd (which had all my stuff on it) crashed sumtime but i ran a program put all my stuff onto the 40 gig 1 and then reformatted my 60gig 1.. it was all good after that

Really a work of art and for the labor of his job as a mod for @masseur here - a very detailed instruction on how-to's for a novice (just like me) . . . Maybe I guess the poster should also buy a power regulator with a standby time of at least 2 hours, just in case of a power outage again ...
