Ah, but it depends upon WHAT the offer is.
OK, so 20% off from a clothes shop might not interest you but I'll bet there is a deal out there that would grab your attention.
Just think what you last bought from a shop and how you would have reacted to a special deal at the time.
We all hate spam because 99% of it is crap that we don't know where it comes from but if you know where the deal is from and it's relevent to you then I disagree that it would turn people off. Everyone can turn BT off if they don't want the hassle but everyone wants a deal - look at the thread on getting a P900 free !
Everyone has their price
Steve

You might think "I'll just turn bluetooth off." and that would be Ok.
But now suppose you meet a friend in the street and you want to exchange some pics/polys/whatever.
As soon as you turn bluetooth on, BAM! 10 messages arrive.
I don't think that, at least, the EU will allow this, 'cos this is a kind of invasion of privacy.
There will be limits surely.

Yup, vinnieza and fabrizio is right.
They can start using bluetooth for marketing purposes, but I doubt it if it would last. Time will come when 'clueless' shoppers won't know which is the real advertisement/discount from shops or a prank from bluejackers.

yeah it has got potential... but there'll be a point where you are walking down the street and your phone goes off every 10secs, which would be really really annoying

Can you imagine someday when almost everyboddy gota long range on their phones. Someone could just sit with their laptop and send a mesage to al people that carry a in 100m range. That would be bluespaming.

it may not work. BT is turned off by default on most phones as stated earlier, and if the phone is paired with a device, i'm not sure if you are still able to receive content via BT if your phone is currently engaged in a pair with another BT device, i may be wrong though. has anyone tried it? overall, i think it is a really stupid idea that will prove to be nothing more than an annoyance because you know that even if you do not opt-in to receive messages, marketers will still send them any opportunity they get.

I don't think commercial bluejacking would work at the moment for the reasons stated in the previous threads about range, message limitations, option to turn BT off etc.
However...
I wouldn't put it past mobile manufacturers to start using always on, 100m bluetooth in their next batch of new phones. With extra software to allow longer messages and even pics to be broadcasted. The shops, of course, would have to have this software too, which would be convieniently licensed from mobile companies. In other words, the mobile companies get extra money off the shops, and we get loads of bluetooth spam.
Not a very nice prediction, I really hope it doesn't happen |

I got a 100m BT dongle for my PC.. could easily work.. I always leave my BT on auto on my P800 and use SMan for autojacking "Zip your flies up!" the thought of bogus offers in a store is nearly as funny as IR Remote is in a TV shop |

No, the latest BT Access Points have a 100m range - just that your phone has a 10m radius when sending.
