@pachy

Your comment "free phones my arse" suggests I am mistaken in thinking I'm getting something for nothing.

I accept, of course, that all phone networks are seeking to make a profit, so on average they must make money from all their customers, and you're right that some of the charges are way too high. (I still can't believe it's 10p for an SMS here. In California it's as little as 2c.

However, it's also true that I would pay exactly the same £/month to be on my Orange tariff if I was still using my old Nokia 2110 (if I still had it).

Every 12 months, I get a brand new phone and carry on paying exactly the same per month as I would if I was using a progressively older phone.

This suggests the upgrade is free, doesn't it?

Put another way, if new customers A and B both connect to an identical Orange talk plan and A chooses a new P800 whereas B goes for a new Nokia 6310i (now 2+ years old), they pay the same amount over the first 12 months in total. This suggests that the difference in value between the two is given to A free.

(Or, as you'll probably argue, it's not free - it's being paid for by B!!!).

oh dear lord. how dumb are u hippo. i am on orange as well. they make their money from the line rental. if you work it out...... I am on a P800 which i got for £200 on a £30 a month contract. far from free but still it will do for an example as it is basically the same minus huuuge contract. You are Locked IN for at least 12 months to this contract. So.. You Pay £200 for the phone, and then £30 a month every month for 12 months after that. after 12 months you have then paid out £360, which, added to the £200 original for the phone means that you have paid the network £560 and that is before you have added on the ridiculously overpriced call charges. btw that is £60 over the retail price of the p800 , £5 a month for the network which is Actually the subscribing fee that you pay. so you see you are not really getting a good deal you are in fact just signing up for a loan.

@Hippo, i will ad this, i am on an Orange contract aswell, have been for ages, its called OVP virgin, its a contract with Orange that costs ZERO a month. with free answerphone meaning me & all my friends can send each other recorded voice messages for free & listen to them & reply for free. THATS "FREE".
I am not tied in to anything so i buy/use what phone i like/when i like,

As for the price of sms, i only send about 5 a day & i use an old Orange "outhere" Just talk sim which give you 5 a day for life for FREE, thats "FREE" (no yearly payment or top up because its the OLD deal when you just paid a one off £15 payment for the free sms package.

If you use the free Orange answerphone, you can set up short codes to replace the persons phone number meaning you dont have to type in the whole number when exchanging voice messages for free, its faster than sms, it costs nothing at ALL (no monthly payment) & its as convenient as sms.

First off Hippo not everyone is as lucky as us. but malc work it out.
I like hippo paid nothing for my p800 through orange, i then pay on average £40 a month for my contract. obviously £480 pound a year.

But from that i get a good gprs bundle hundreds of messages a month and hundreds of minutes of talktime. Plus as hippo u get free insurance so if something does happen to it its no great problem.

That said, if u take any care for what is probably the best thing since the invention of the pda you will want a good screen protecter.

I found them at a local computer fair and they were not expensive either.

Not looking after your phone (by using a screen protector)? What else about you don't you care about? Hygiene, health, teeth, personal stench!?

$12 spent at Brando Workshop - not gonna break the bank.

Steven.

I just bought a standard screen protecter and cut it to fit my P800, but you can buy specially made ones online, just do a search for them...

How about!!

Because it's an expensive PHONE!!!!!

If you were given a Ferrari, does that mean you would trash it! Because you didnt pay anything for it!!!!

Does not matter how much you paid for this phone, free on contract or what! It is still worth a lot of money!

Some people should not have such a device!
