Personally, I think it's possible to drive safely whilst on the phone - but I also think that about 80% of the people doing it don't do it safely, so it should be banned.
It's always been either Driving without due care and attention or Dangerous Driving in the past - usually the police make sure you change gear before they stop you, then they can ask you how you changed gear. I don't think saying "I'm a clever dick" holds any water...

you may be able to drive whilst using your phone but what about everbody else? you might feel different if you saw a nutter heading towards you at 50mph if that guy had hit me it would of been a combined speed of 100mph. try driving into a concrete wall at that speed.

I watched Top Gear last Sunday night and it was scary enough seeing the damage that was done to cars crashed at 30 and 40 MPH!

I agree with the ban but how far will it go ? Will they ban drivers from talking to passengers, or listening/singing along to their stereo.
I think we live in a nanny state.

i agree with the ban on phones as long as it applys to the police and everyone else and not just normal motorist as usual.just another way of making money along with speed cameras on safe roads.
they will be stopping and fining people for having a wank in the car next getting someone to do it for you its all wrong

We've had this ban on hand held phones in New York fer several years now. Hands free option still legal. To be honest, I find it more distracting to use a headset while driving. When I use the handset and something comes up, I can just move the phone away. Can't do that if the input is right into my ear!
My guess is that the more effective ban will be on all cellphone use while operating a motor vehicle. Or, alternately, allowing speakerphone use only! But I wonder if it will really cut down on accidents? |

its covered by the high sides of the car they would have to be looking in them windows and surely that would make them peeping toms (or whatever the female equivalent is ) |
