Ok, so how come it says in the January Whitepaper that they have a roadmap to 1Gb for the Duos? And it does say Duo not memory Pro!

duo will go upto but not beyond 1gb - ask they will tell you the same as will sony
any device using the bigger ms duos will need a software upgrade
this will no doubt be included in the big april upgrade
ms pro will start a 1 gb and go up to 30gb (serious) and beyond for use in memory stick pro camcorders

I should have been a bit more clear - the original Memory Stick spec has a *physical* limitation of 128MB max. The new Memory Stick PRO, as has been mentioned, is bank-switchable between a "compatibility" bank and an extended bank of up to 896MB. This extended bank will NOT be accessable to standard MS devices, which includes the P800.
Third-party vendors, however, appear to be making sticks that have several 128MB banks, all of which are accessable to standard MS devices.
The DUO PRO will eventually support up to 1GB, but that doesn't mean that the P800 will support PRO cards, even with a software upgrade. Will be interesting to see how this develops. Did the hardware guys know about PRO far enough in advance to make the P800 PRO-ready??

I thought Sony were producing a backwards compatable set of MS which use a switch so you can have sticks above the reader hardwares limit. This would mean that if you wanted to put a movie on to a memory stick then you'd have to split it up into 'chapters', which really isn't that big a deal. It's just how quick and easy with bank switching is. a few banks of 128MB wouldn't be too much of a bad thing. |
