Over here (Beijing, China) the iPhone/iPad thing is insane.
I've lived out here for about a year and I've noticeda few things about this.
Basically to have an apple product is a show of status and wealth.
There is definitely a sense of if you can afford an iPhone you buy an iPhone, if you have anything else (like I have an arc) then people think it's because you can't afford an iPhone. Seriously. I get looks on the subway that scream 'idiot' for carrying a touchscreen phone that's not an iPhone. The Apple worship in China is 100 times wporse than in Western countries.
There was a story in Beijing here about fighting outside the Apple store whilst queuing for an iPad2, 4 people ended up in hospital, the media accepted that iPad are popular and made no effort to tell people "It's shit anyway don't waste your money" instead they made a huge thing about the Apple employee who was fighting was white and therefore it must've been because he was racist or just wanted to bully Chinese guys in some way.
I think China has excluded themselves from the outside world for so long now that their mentality and behaviours can't be compared on the same playing field as western mentality, similarly it's wrong for ousiders to judge what is deemed 'normal' in China. e.g. it's quite normal or even encouraged for a girl to find a guy who's wealthy and marry for money, regardless of age difference, rather than any emotional attachment, and that guy will regularly buy expensive gifts for the girl, expensive is the key word.
