SE is kinda facing a bottle neck in their software development that they start looking into giving more fans/ developers to contribute.

Considering this only works for unlocked and non-branded phones, I don't see that concern.

its not a concern....its just look like a way to over come all the head count reduction they did for the past few years.
now when they try to grow....i am not surprise they notice a shortage of resources and they might be unwilling to grow so fast.

this approach have its pros and cons. sorry...maybe the first remark wasn't clearly pointed out by me. I think for Developers or die hard fans, they will be happy if this is allowing them to help SE ...as in a way they really listening to the fans

It would be neat if someone could design a multi-core Android phone that could dock & power a tablet shell. Something like the Atrix 4g which can turn into a laptop or a PC by simply docking into the right shell :

Great if Sony does it - they do have the Vaio line. Xperia Vaio anyone ?

Well, at one point not too long ago some thought a 1Ghz processor was overkill and just before that, we thought do we really need GPS on a phone? Now they a smartphone staples, so SE should think along these lines (not just the quad-core thing) if they're serious to take on the leading role.
