Ericsson/SE did not renew their license to use T9... this is because Sony developed a newer 'predictive text' input method... parts of it were seen on the T68i, it works similar to MS Word's Auto Complete... If you didn't notice it, the T68i can, with certain words, complete the whole word for you only after 3 keystrokes.
I was never fond of T9... I loved the predictive text on the T68i... I didn't use it that often, but it is useful for one-handed typing operations... For me, SE should include it in the P800. Whether you use it or not, that's up to you. I do NOT want T9, I want Sony's Auto Complete...it worked really well on the T68i.
Right now, the P800's SW has a lot of pieces missing; browser, glitches, etc..etc... it's only been out for about a month or so... let's wait a while to see what future SW upgrades will bring... Remember, we're all still running the FIRST commercial release of the SW. Opera isn't even in it yet! |

I used T9 with my N7110 (all the time). It is the only alternative available for that model. Now that my P800 has handwriting recognition, I am using it exclusively (except on very very very few occassions when I only need to reply a Yes, or No, or OK and not even need to open the flip cover) because I normally reply to 2 out of the 3 types of messages (SMS and E-mail, I seldom receive MMS messages). And that's beside posting to Esato, of course. I could not imagine myself composing a reply to an e-mail message or a reply to and Esato post using either the real or virtual keyboard.
BUT....I still think that having the T9 would have made the P800 more than perfect (coming from a T9 user). It is always nice to know that it is there when I want to use my flip or virtual keyboard.

@bloomp:
I sympathise with you. These people obviously have not heard what you said. You can look for a Nokia to do texting after a few beers yes, but are you going to change your phone to a Nokia just before you go out to the pubs? Wake up your freaking idea and find some common sense. We people bring our P800s everywhere, every single frigging where. We email on the go, play games on the go, surf the net on the go, watch videos on the go, listen to mp3s on the go, but we ALSO text on the go. Texting on the toilet bowl, texting in the trains, texting while driving, texting while clubbing. Obviously you guys are just businessmen and not much else. It's stupid to assume once people are like 'smart businessmen' and do all of the above, texting just becomes unimportant. People like bloomp and me are just normal blokes who text while doing other things. There is no substitute for T9 in these situations.
And for 'smart businessmen' like you are, obviously you can't count the amount of calories used writing a word 'stupid' on T9 vs jot: 6 short, curt key presses vs 8 strokes of 1cm average.

@Bloomp, In my circle of friends i was a very fast t9 user, however after getting a p800 here in Essex (not far from you so i`ll race you to input a sentance for a pint if you like) a month ago, i now input QUICKER on qwerty keyboard. (i`ve timed it for posts on here before & qwerty is faster) it`s LESS taps per word because the word is always the correct one with no if/he starkey corrections.AND the letters are spaced out over a smaller area
I have an old nokia 8210 to do the comparisons on & i`m not a crazed SE only fan.
I`m sorry you don`t get on with p8`s text input but it`s silly to say people who say p8 doesn`t need t9 "hav`nt used the phone or are crap t9 users" maybe you have imperfect sight or hav`nt used the p800 long enough.
The only area p8 fails for some people is two handed use, but thats no problem for me because i always used both thumbs for rapid t9 input.
For people like you i hope a predictive input system becomes available as a downloadable app.

@pachy old pal, do you still poke so well(:D) after a few beers in the pub? Those letters on the QWERTY are TINY!! |

@Brick, to be honest most people i send to have t68i so if i`m worse for wear i scribble a message or draw a little pic in the "scribble" option in the MMS writing menu & send that, all MMS are free here for another month.
Its handy cos you just write on the screen in colour & send it.
Also i`ve downloaded spoken things from films as wavs & if i can match the correct thing to say, i just send that,....one is Austin powers saying "do you want to touch my monkey".
HMMMMM.... thats funny....i can`t see what you just changed in your previous post, but you changed SOMETHING.

@pachy: Subtlety is the best. It keeps people guessing. (?)
And no, I don't want to touch your monkey. Your money maybe.
But to make a small matter big, I'm really sorely missing T9 on the phone. My sms output per day has dropped by 5 since I switched from the T68i to the P800. How's that?

@brick, Well there is a reason i use sms less nowdays, on my Orange sim voicemail is free & i can speed dial voicemail press option 2 add a code for a particular persons Orange number (1# or 2# or 3# etc) then speak to record a message then listen to it to check it then either send now or future send up to 1 month ahead.
The other Orange user gets the alert listens to it & can record a reply all for free.the service costs no money to any Orange user with these sims which are a contract billed sim but has no monthly line rental.
Which means the same number for life at no cost (we have had them for 3yrs) are they stupid or what.
ps. this sim also has free MMS at the moment & free 0800 numbers allowing me to dial out to calling cards for free & get all my calls for less than landline prices.

thanks @Brick!!
glad i am not alone out there. My text output has dropped too! I am sure Orange will be contacting SE and demanding that they give the p800 some sort of T9. Because if they don't their profits will fall dramatically due to my lack of texting! |

I just had a thought that maybe tegic started to get really greedy & asked a silly licencing price, as t9 will never be on p800 (SE`s words not mine) maybe tegic should have made it available as a download that can be bought online.
Personally i think it`s a bit of a nineties fix & as phones are likely to have voice recognision text input soon, it makes all hand input modes look silly.
A voice input app could even be in the pipeline for p8 ????? |

Well, I spent about 700$ for this p800 phone.
I think that T9 should be included, I have nothing more to say.
I do love SE phones, but hey!!! You made a stupid mistake by removing this very useful function.
You should be a shame and release this in the next firmware upgrade.

No credit away from jot and qwerty, but have you tried using it in a moving vehicle, a bus or a train. With all the shaking going on you're lucky to hit the right key every fourth time, and jot, lucky if you don't break the display.

Agreed.
Anyway I don't understand all the people who come into the forums and say:"you don't need T9". It's pretty much like some of us not ever listening to MP3 saying that the P800 should do without the Audio player, because whether you need it or not, there ARE others who need it. So just shut up.
But as for us poor souls, instead of complaining to ourselves endlessly, why don't we write a collective letter, both to SE and to Tegic, to stress how much we need it in the phone. This may solve a lot more problems than the endless ranting with these people who don't feel our pain anyway. |
