Surely software can't correct hardware too much, starting too look a bit rushed to me.

It looks like VGA quality Terrible but I guess photography is not what the iphone is all about.

I already thought the iOS 4 was a bit rushed though actually the preinstalled version on my iPhone 4 actually runs successfully the couple of apps that crash on my 3GS with the GM release which actually has the same version number... so thats a bit confusing!
btw, my photo examples are just quick snaps without much thought, so don't take these as prime examples... although in reality, a camera phone should be able to be whipped out at a moments notice so in some ways they can be respresentative
The videos are defintly better than the stills, which in itself is unusual!
I've downloaded the iMovie app and will be playing with that over the weekend

Do some from the dizzy heights from your work place. Place it on stable surface with decent light looking out into London See what it looks like in sunshine too. Have you tried the LED flash?

click on the image to see the larger images lol.
Just a couple i took today... nothing special. I hardly ever put them on my pc and only use the phone camera to catch spare of the moment snaps. Anyone who thinks they can use a mobile phone for proper photo's needs to get a reality check and buy a proper camera!

Compare masseur's full size garden shot using the iPhone 4 with your garden shot using an SE Elm:
To me the iPhone 4 seems to handle details better. Compare the wooden fence in both shots. The Elm takes out some detail due to noise reduction. The color tone is different. Masseur's shot seems to have been taken on an overcast day, whereas bonovox' shot was taken in a little more light (hint: overexposed flowers in the foreground).

I think masseur did a mistake posting full size photos. Most people here are not 'pixel peppers' and don't care about panning and zooming while looking at photos. (I promise to not do the same myself from now on. )
And Apple were clever not to post sample photos taken in less than perfect light as masseur did here. Speaking of which, I'd say the same about Nokia's coming fancycamera, the N8. We'll see how good (or bad!) that phone really is only when camphone reviews and users start posting their own photos taken with it.

No if you see pictures looking like that full size its awful sorry. And your comparison was daft the Elm has much better details. All I see is noise and poor details not much sharpness. Also the bottom left of the garden shot is over exposed with a touch of purple fringing

@masseur & voda john
Could you upload pics @1024 x 765 resolution?
The 3GS photos weren't that sharp either, I guess thats just Apple

i agree with bonovox. The elm takes better pics. For such a overpriced phone, the pics are quite poor. |

@bonovox,
Reading quickly I thought it was your Elm shot you were talking about and I was about to agree but then I read your post again. We all have different tastes and opinions. I prefer a camera to not apply too much post-processing. Elm does quite a bit of that. Look at the black edges around your over-exposed dandelions. That's excessive sharpening.
The N6700 shots you were posting before were much better than from the Elm and better than the iPhone 4.
@mriley,
Agreed but most people don't usually see the full photos and when printed at typical sizes (for example 4x6"), the noise you see at full size will not be apparent. So no need for waxwork.
I also feel a bit disappointed with the iPhone 4 camera. Definitely noisier than the 3GS's camera.
One guy on Flickr posted a comparison here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mattbuchanan/sets/72157624228235507/
