The Megapixel Myth |

My point exactly. A lot of amateur photographers can't tell the difference between a badly composed shot that exposes the weaknesses inherent in all cameras and an actual limitation in the camphone.
I was down at the beach recently and volunteered to take a photo for some British tourists. I used the 'rule of thirds' to compose the shot and they marvelled at how much better it was than their feeble attempts. The skill of the photographer is always more important than the hardware or software.

I agree! Why?! It's not because of the image size that matters. It's the quality. My K700i's camera's great when outdoors (except when the sun is around), but if it is dark, it sucks (sorry, my best friend)!
Do you know what?! I've impressed on Nokia 6820's camera. It is only sized CIF (352 x 288 pixels). In the mobile phone, the picture looked like awful. But when I moved it into a PC, it was as perfect as a photographer's shot.

exactly, more densely packed pixels on a sensor chip means more heat, which can introduce speckles into low-light shots, this is certainly the case here where 'less is more' in term of image quality. phone companys are just cramming too many high tech sensors into one tiny mobile, they need to find a good balance.
Personally i dont find the iphone/satio appealing. too big , phones are meant to be small and sleek but these are just big chunky and fat

So your saying more megapixels in a camera phone can reduce picture quality?
What if I put my W995 on 5mp mode?
or is the W995 not relevent? haha |

yeah, this shows how important it is to compare pictures on the web |

Up to a point, yes because the sensor is small , so more cramming of mp's mean less light intake. lol and there have been having reviews saying that the w995 camera isnt very good anyway xD , you can look at post pictures yourself But its meant to be very good value for money |

@mriley, I disagree. the sensor would still take the full size image and then the image gets downsized by discarding unwanted pixels. This has not changed the original pixel density, the amount of light collected and does not change the quality of the image unless the downsizing has to do more than simply discard pixels, i.e. if the reduced resolution is not a direct factor of the original size, in which case the quality may be reduced
so using a lower resolution will not improve your pics IMHO

As with a lot of things, it is only as good as its weakest part.
It is pointless having an amazing camera if you are a really rubbish photographer.
Megapixels are only a part of what makes a digital camera. A lot of camera phones compress the picture to make smaller JPEG files which degrades the quality as well as having small sensors etc..

@ massuer , the proof as they say.. is in the pudding, you can take a look urself of the satio night / low light shots, they look very noisy |

Is this always true for all camphones/digicams? I would have hoped that they used averaging for collecting the pixel value from the pixel that will be retained and it's neighbors before discarding the neighboring pixels.
If you're correct then better shoot at full resolution and then scale down in a PC using a good photo editor. (Note: Windows' Paint app and MS Office Photo Editor are not good photo editors...)

@AbuBasim: I have been wondering the same for a while...
Could someone confirm or deny this?

Perhaps we should have a megapixel thread. People taking the same shots of comparison with say a 5 mega pixel and a 12 side by side. You get the picture

what i've understand on this matter is this:
let's say we have a 2MP and a VGA camera phone with the same sensor suited for the VGA.. of course, the VGA will be better..
but if the 2MP camera phone has the right sensor for the cam, the same quality is achieved when VGA is chosen as the size..
if SE Satio and Samsung Pixon12 has the sensor suited for a 12MP camera, it will outperform others, even the Digital Cameras.. ^_^

Like i said before my Canon 5 mega pixel camera beats my Sony 8.1 mega pixel camera for picture quality detail colour saturation sharpness brightness everything. The Sony is more soft with muted colours think i may even sell it. I need wide angle The Sony Ericsson w810 from what i remember was one of the best 2 mega pixel cameras i have seen for overall quality. And yet so many phone cameras since with higher pixels have produced much worse. That just goes to show its down to software, lens, processer amoung other things and not how many millions of pixels it has.
