I plan to start with the Stanford university free iphone developer course, which can also be downloaded from itunes

I guess it helps if you're a developer already

right, first questions!

how to make the mousepad react to taps rather than having to press the button?

does mac have the equivalent to windows update?

Go into settings mouse and activate tapping, it'll be pretty obvious where it is.

Click on the apple then software update

Sorry to ask but how much did it cost?

thanks, found those! I'll just have to get used to where things are on the mac

I paid £500 + delivery which I thought seemed pretty good for the spec. came with office 2008, some titanium toast (?) and a few other "extras" I still haven't figured out yet

any ideas why I am only seeing 56kb/sec download speed via wifi on the mac when my vaio sitting right next to it gets 20mb/sec+? (I'm on virgin fibre optic 50mbit plan)

edit: if I go to network utility and select the wireless network interface it shows model: wireless network adapter (802.11 a/b/g/n). my Virgin wireless router is an 802.11n box so I don't know why I can download the same file (the iphone sdk) so much faster on my pc compared with the mac?

ended up downloading on pc in 15 minutes (2gb sdk) and transferring to mac using usb memory stick
I'll figure the speed issue out some other time

currently working through the stanford university iphone developer course and just wrote my first app! the presenter got it wrong and it crashed and so had to revert to the one he had "prepared earlier". Mine worked first time

thanks.
I used safari to get to the web page and start the download, and the download went into some sort of "downloads" app. not sure if thats part of safari on mac? it was there the reported speed varied from 30kbps to about 80kbps or so and it said it was going to take 15 hours! I stopped and restarted several times with varying results in the same range
everything else on this mac is working well though I'm still struggling to find stuff but thats inevitable on a new device I guess

don't seem to have multi-touch for zooming etc, unless I'm doing something wrong.
how can I tell what exact model this is an hence, how old? the specs are good but presumably its been upgraded hdd and memory wise

To my knowledge your model doesn't have multi-touch. Any chances of a picture?

I don't know what model I have? it doesn't seem so obvious on macs unless there's a system info type view somewhere that tells you, so I;m not sure how you can be certain my model doesn't have multi touch, though you are very probably right!

what would you like a picture of?
btw, how do you do screen shots on mac?

edit: oh, if you meant a pic of the mac... here's a pic of my vaio running the itunes course (currently showing the iphone architecture) on the left, with the mac on the right currently running the iphone simulator with my first app ( a simple slider with value of slider underneath)
