i used a vodaphone and a O2 sim cards on it, no problem, but i notice the reception for the O2 is stronger than that on Vodaphone.

I am quite glad that are taking their time to release P800 - or the uk nets are delaying it - I hope they insist on a better quality handset - no manufacturer should release their product until it can do what it says on the box (I have never seen handset freezes from time to time in the manual) It will save me a big head ache at work - or am I just being selfish?? I agree but I think that in the case of the P800, most people who own them would be happier to own them early and upgrade them when needed, as the P800 is mainly a "techy"'s phone.

If you were talking about the T300 or similar then you'd be closer to the mark in waiting for it to be 100% before it was released.

I would prefer to have the phone now and get the firmware updated in 2-3 months when things had settled down slightly - especially as it's free.

Here here!! Give me the phone now, I'll get used to the bugs and work my way around them till updates are available (afterall, isn't that what everyone who uses Windows has to do anyway?)

On no account would I expect any company (apart from Microsoft) to release a phone as buggy as the SPV... but considering that the P800's been released in loads of countries almost a month back, with no real problems... surely can't they just release the P800 here and now!!

I reckon I know exactly why the P800 is being delayed in the UK...

I expect Orange to have struck a deal with SE to guarantee that they are the first SP to bring the phone to the UK. Because Orange always take so long to bring a phone to market, it has been delayed. Other SPs can not bring it to market regardless of whether it's ready or not because of this deal.

As a 2 month active user and developer of the p800 i can guarantee that the commercial version has several serious flaws which i would highly recommend you wait for the updated version before buying, some of those errors/bugs you may consider ignoring but it does limit the phones properties.....
--folders cannot be created permenantly because new programs download delete folder contents, e.g business folder, tools folder and revert everything back to the main screen/all folder.
--reboot screen appears very frequently and can lose several unsaved applications.
--HSCD accounts do not remain online for very long.
etc... other forums display all the other errors....those were just the most obvious ones....
--If this doesnt bother you then fair enough, you deserve your p800 A.S.A.P but serious users who require the p800 for important business reasons are better off waiting for a stable version irrespective of whether a corrected update would be available at a much later stage.

I've nad no serious problems with my P800... yes it has a few quirks and needs a reset every now and then, but I've never lost any data. Folders stay where they are, I've never lost an appointment or entry so far.

The OS could be more stable... I can wait for firmware upgrades.... but so far, I'm glad I bought the P800.

Orange Pay SE off for 1st release rights Like they could afford to yeah.lol

Reasons for the delay.
OK
Vodafone are trying to move away from providing technology and towards providing services thus VF Live.
VF live will only survive if the mobile phone users pay for the services on VF Live like the Java games ringtones piccys etc etc.

The SE P800 can download Java games etc etc from just about anywhere, therefore why bother using VF Lives services.

VF are the primary (and reputedly the most harsh) testers for new to market phones.
this phone has been with them since at the latest june/july last year in fact I think I remember hearing about it being tested by a VF employee in april last year.
VF are probably trying to think of ways of making it harder for ppl to d/load stuff outside of Live services.
ie Managment who really dont understand the technology say to ppl nearer the ground, this is far too open can you restrict it so ppl cant go to Another dot com to d/load their games.
techies say "No, we can make it more convoluted tho" they go back to SE & say make this more convoluted.
SE turn around & say "erm, No we cant we've already commited to these platforms & open Standards & this OS"
Techies turn round to management who have forgotton what the P800 looks like even & say "remember that memo you sent us asking us to make it more convoluted, well here u go".
Management look at it dont understand that its the same phone & say "Yes it's much better, now go tweak it alittle more to stop ppl from d/loading from Another Dot Com"
Techies submit their CVs to Jobserve & the Cycle starts again.

Orange needn't pay SE, but they might have struck some kind of deal, perhaps on volume?

Anyway, why not? they did it with the Nokia 7110.

I doubt whether all SPs are truly that blind, and AIUI Orange are the worst for testing as they have always offered their own insurance, and don't want to have to splash out for lots of replacements. (How the SPV ever got through the net I'll never know!)

Orange heavily restrict the phones available to their users, and are the last SP in this country to continue to keep IMEI and SIM numbers bonded together, and frown on practices like changing SIMs etc. They are by far the most paranoid network.

I have a nokia 7210 that uses the voda live service. Very rarely i admit. There is no way that voda could re erect the "garden wall" around their wap service and java downloads on phones without loosing out to other operators. I agree that most people prob only look at the sites that their sp put onto the phone, but there is no way that they will stop people from downloading java from where ever they want.
Voda and all other SPs make money no matter where you get your downloads from, as they charge you for how many Mbs of info you get.
So if you pay tham for the odd download here and there they make some money. If you get loads of free downloads they still win as you use more Mbs of GPRS or wap mins up.
Plus you could download the files to your pc and install them to your phone from there.
I think all that voda have done with the Live servise is change the marketing that they use to draw in more customers.

Dont get me wrong,
VF Live is as far as I cant tell a very good service, and I doo agree (ihoped it was obvious from my posts sarcasm) that the idea is a little far fetched that they are succeeding on erecting a 'sandbox' around the services on offer.

I was just expanding on an article which i had read lately re P800's & the availability of stuff to D/Load which had more plausibility than Orange paying off SE.

They basically (like most of them but are far worse off) have driven themselves in to financial ruin with the 3g fiasco.

Well hopefully the indication from expansys price changes are that the thing is nearing shipping date.

I was in my local Vodafone shop this morning getting a new sim card and they mentioned that the rep was there yesterday showing them the P800 but that vodafone at least will not be getting it until March now.

The sales person was a bit miffed when I pulled mine out! (and the P800!)

@@@ 'Orange heavily restrict the phones available to their users, and are the last SP in this country to continue to keep IMEI and SIM numbers bonded together, and frown on practices like changing SIMs etc. They are by far the most paranoid network' - this is because of insurance - how can you expect to get a 7210 replaced when you register with a 3330??? come on - networks just dont send out handsets willy-nilly? So does anyone know when the P800 will be released in the UK now, as its now almost the end of Jan? I have 2 t68i's and 1 t68 and need to know the price and release of the P800 here in the UK, so that i know how much money i need to buy one (need to know how much i should sell me t68s for?) Does anyone know what SE (the e-shop i think its called) have said about delivery, they said if people pre-ordered for 499.99 they would get it by 1st week of Feb, will these people still be recieveing theirs?
Also does anyone know when T-mobile will be getting it and anyone got a clue of how much it would cost on Upgrade? [addsig]
