IMO:
Pro Sony:
Use your existing Sony Lenses
Higher Megapixel (doesnt necessarily mean better pictures though).
Keep your existing Memory cards (450D uses SD)
Lenses dont need image stabalisation as its build into the body meaning cheaper lenses.
Moveable live view screen
Cheaper.
Lighter.
Faster AF in Live View
Pro Canon:
Higher ISO range
More lenses available
More lenses available on Ebay
USM lenses
Can connext to computer to shoot pictures (Ithink it can anyway).
Higher FPS rate (2.5 on Sony 3.5 on Canon).
If you arent too worried about cost then go for the 450D, overall it is the better camera but dont under estimate the Sony.
I am using a Sony A300 (a A350 with 10MP instead of 14MP) and love it. One really useful feature is it focuses automatically when you put your eye upto the viewfinder (not when in live view) so it is already focused before you press the button. this is a geature that my friend with with his new 40D likes.

Whilst i agree with a varied market. I think like mosst industries there are leaders and followers.
Surely you would want to get the leading camera for your money. Nikon and Canon are the leaders - even Minolta have fallen back.
I know the arguement will be about funds possibly at these mid-ranged placed camera.
Whenever i am asked about recommedations on a camera, i always point in the direction of Canon / Nikon.
Just my opinion though.

Within reason funds aren't a major issue, i am not going to spend thousands but a couple of hundred extra would be ok the reason I chose these cameras is because of the reviews I have read & watched and because it seemed the natural progression after my a200. I also considered the a700

40D is very good but i do prefer the Nikon equivalent D300 (shame its over priced)
but the D60 is not as good as the Canon 450D.
Ooh this confusing

Minolta havent fallen back, they left the digital camera market in 2006 and the digital SLR arm was bought by Sony. The Sony Alpha range was born from Minoltas digital range and at the budget end of DSLRs are gaining sales ground on Canon and Nikon. The Sonys can use most of the lenses and flashes that Minolta made later on.

@nicv27, since you've mentioned that you did consider the A700, I'd say go for it if you're intending to stick with the Alpha. The A350 isn't that much of an upgrade from your A200. The A700 has more to offer and picture quality is noticeably better. The A700 is using a CMOS sensor which offers better noise control.
Also, the advantage of getting the A700 is that you can use your current lenses without needing any adaptors.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. |

I know JC but they will never be a leader in my opinion.
Maybe on a consumer level they have gained ground, but my comments are made on my experience.
You never see anything but Canon or Nikon in the professional field.

I never said that Sony was at professional level just saying that Minolta hadn't really gone away but had been reborn as Sony. Also have never seen a 450D used by professionals only things like 40Ds and 5D MKII's.

The software supplied with my A300 (same software as A350) says it works with Mac OSX 10.1.3 or later.

^ I'd love too but unfortunately i have to work this weekend and the Olympics won't build theirself. With Regards to camera choice I think it will be the Canon Eos 450d(I think I have made up mind now) and a new mac book to edit the pictures on after.
Thanks for all the advice it's been much appreciated

You'll want Aperture 2 to go on that MacBook.
And a quick tip, avoid the Regent Street store.
Go to the Westfield one, it's decently big and nowhere near as crowded as Regent St.
