If it's cheaper to produce 2G version than 3G, and sell it for same price, it's very smart from SE side..

Maybe they do maybe they don't. I would think that they probably sell for a bit less in the Chinese market... with the massive number of ultra cheap and copied handsets in that market SE would need to be very competitive.

btw, I agree they should cut by 20%, but more than that is not necessary imho. 20% is 1 in 5, whic is enough to removethe confusion but not enough to kill off the choice for consumers.

And maybe they should try entering the CDMA market. Low-end handsets like these sell like crazy in APAC and have generated strong revenues for the Koreans and the Chinese. Also, CMIIW but AFAIK the CDMA network is better for wireless data connection, at least in my country.

Telecom NZ is phasing out CDMA technology also in favour of UMTS 850 but without the lower spec 2G/2.5G GSM technology. Low spec non 3G phones are becoming obselete over here.

CDMA licencing fees are prohibitively expense, even Nokia spat the dummy making Qualcomm look a bit silly for a time.

Ericsson as whole left the CDMA market a couple of years ago since there was not much to gain for them in that market. By the end of 2006 around 10-15% of all subscribers worldwide used CDMA and it seems to slowelly go downhill. Of those I would guess NA has the biggest subscriber base.

I believe the biggest (or at least one of the biggest)CDMA phone manufacturer is LG. Without that market my guess is LG would be even further behind SE in terms of phone market share world wide.

It should be noted that what generally is refered to as 3G, UMTS etc. uses a variant of CDMA (WCDMA) as a carrier interface.

Correct, but when people discuss the merits of CDMA versus WCDMA (GSM/UMTS/HSDPA) they are generally talking about phones without SIM cards versus those with.

SE are on the right path moving forward with fewer phone models, more emphasis on high end, involvement in the Symbian Foundation and the move to WM, great looking phones and an increased focus on it's core business. These are all good moves from SE and I'm sure we'll see them profitable again soon.
