Sorry to disappoint you all, but it's not possible for third parties to develop applications using the P800 camera.
The following was posted by a Senior Java developer at Sony Ericsson to the Developer Zone discussion forum:
For this product no native camera API is disclosed towards third party developers.
I will not elaborate on the exact rationale behind the decision.
In general the following should apply to such API's:
Internal API's require an abstraction layer for acceptable robustness in order to be suitable for public exposure (no pun intended). A public API needs to be concise, well documented and robust.
There may be considerable security/integrity issues associated with disclosing a public camera API. Image capture is a powerful capability in a Internet connected device and could easily be abused by malicious applications without end user awareness.
Vendors that publish such an API take a risk with their product.
A risk assessment could conclude that the immediate availability of network connectivity in combination with image capture is a 'sitting duck waiting for those rogue apps to strike'. Of course for a developer it is a very exciting feature to play with.
In case of the P800 the camera feature is available to end users through the integrated native 'Communicam' application. It offers several ways to share photos with other users over Email,BT,MMS, for inclusion in contacts, showing a photo of a calling party, etc.

That's dumb... Nokia's 7650 has that functionality.
Well, maybe it's just a LEGAL thing for SE... Remember that SONY got into trouble for their "x-ray" vision handycam a while back... maybe they're just paranoid.
The fact that the camera has a smooth viewfinder means that there IS a way to make it a video cam...
Geez, even for just short video clips to email, etc...something that complies with the MPG4 standard and can be played back on the P800 WITH AUDIO.
The BEST would be something made by Packet video for live streaming! Damn, have you guys tried the Live Camera links??!?!?! Incredibly smooth STREAMING video over GPRS!!!! |

What security issues?!?!?!?
About the most people would see from a hacked P800 would be the inside of someone's jacket pocket.
Secondly what a ridiculous attitude to take, it's like saying as you can use cars to kill people no-one is now allowed to drive.
SE Twat!
As an aside what's the odds of SE releasing a movie app for the P800 but requiring you to pay say £40 for the privilege?

WOW!! How cool!! The song they're encoding is Spirit Carries On, by Dream Theater - one of the best Progressive Rock bands around... They are like my favourite band, and that song Spirit Carries On is probably one of their finest songs (which I can play on my piano almost perfectly now!!)
If anyone likes really hard and fast guitar solos (like just slinging flight of the bumble bee into a guitar solo), then check out that dude John Petrucci! He is something special, and in the running for one of the worlds best guitarists (according to guitar mags)...
Sorry but I was a bit excited to see that
Oh by the way, if anyone wants to see photos of Dream Theater in concert, then click here for the photos when I went to see them a couple of months back : http://www.funkyberry.com/dt20022.htm
