Wooohooo.. Team GBs first gold medal for Nicole Cooke, Womens Road Race..

Yeeehaaa!

Yeah, that was a good race in atrocious weather, I would have liked to have seen Pooley get a medal, she did alot of work motivating the Peleton in the final stages. NZ are just as inept in road racing as we are in football... Oh I miss the days of track racing superstar Sarah Ulmer!

Edit:
@M-O
Just saw your pic. Nice one!
He's still the greatest!

Missed that unfortunately as I'm watching boxing ATM, but this arvo I saw Michael Phelps win gold and a very happy Dutch womens relay team with a Olympic record.

What happened in Tibet is nothing compared to other places in the World so I will happily comment if someone opens a dedicated thread on politics. The athletes have nothing to do with Tibet anyway so blame China and not the Olympics.

The Olympics are special because the prize is the medal but no money. The sportsmen and women go there to become the best in the World so the games are played with pride. Its not like football where players cheat, dive, intimidate, smeer etc. to ensure they win, purely because the money involved is astronomical.

The athletes represent themselves so those who believe that they can win can often pull it off, its unpredictable which makes for a good watch. Many people come out as heroes and go down in history, thats got to be more valuable than money.

Seem to remember Ben Johnson Marion jones and countless others, although you are right money is not the prize the medal is, the vastly improved deal that the athlete gets from their sponsors is a big help.

What are the chances of Bangladesh getting a medal out of their 9 athletes? USA has around 400 there!
