Great news!
The effort going in to developing 4 different platforms must be huge and confusing for the customer.
Good move I say. Lets hope touch-screen stays.

Is it good news for UIQ?
Does it mean Sony might use UIQ as its touchscreen interface in future instead of WM?
This basically means that UIQ & S60 are going to be combined into 1 simple platform with varying models & needs and markets.
Strange though because I thought the whole purpose of Symbian was that no 1 entity would control it and hord it. Now it seems the seperation and obvious FAILINGS - yes I say failings when LESS manufacturers are interested in licensing it or developing it - and strengths of UIQ can be utilized by the sheer number of S60 developers.
No big surprise, more shock that this MAJOR agreement was kept hush hush for so long. Nokia has been buying up major software houses that build upon S60 and fronting Flash & Widlets for S60 for quite some time. Motorola got wood into purchasing 50% of UIQ from SonyEricsson (big profit there), and with Nokia's slight foray some 12mths ago in building a UIQ phone (yes they built just 1) now they have the FULL experience (modern: 7700 & 7710 was so old) in going touch screen.
The only bad news is Nokia is BURNING UP serious cash to get this happening, when ALL parties stand to loose if Symbian comes crashing down; so they should ALL front the bill.

I know we are yet to see S60 touch but surley once UIQ have contributed all they can it will be abandoned. Surley SE will want to use the newer OS that has proven to be more popular right?

This news is quite interesting since this platform sounds really promising.
But there is something bothering me.
Are we still gonna get software support for our UIQ devices?
And if for how long? |

OK ur CUT OFF! (the drinks that is). The more popular OS?! UIQ ... very wrong here ... however I'm wrong that I think Symbian is the OS and in my mind always was, while S60 & UIQ evolved from GUI's to platforms. UIQ have contributed but I'm wondering which is older .... S90 or UIQ?! If you're not sure what S90 is take a look at Nokia's 7700 & 7710. Both where quite capable and Nokia has had LONG DELAYED plans in incorporating Series 90 to Series 60 (previous name for S60). This goes back some 4-5yrs ago if I'm not mistaken. Sorry P800 = 2002, 7710 = 2004. But look at eithers specs:
Nokia 7710

SonyEricsson P800
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_p800-326.php
S60 models, will not be abondoned, but I think some things in UIQ will be incorporated into the high end S60 Touch models.

"UIQ Technology in Ronneby notice 200 of 375 employees. Branch offices in Budapest and London are probably closed completely.
Staff information meetings have been held on UIQ in Ronneby in the morning. Notice has now been placed on 200 posts.
Most of UIQ's employees work in Ronneby, 325 persons. Others are in London and Budapest.
If the notice follows through the two offices abroad will be closing, according to UIQ: S Communications Carina Dietmans.
The reason for notice is a merging of a new software platforms for mobile phones, among several major global companies. UIQ's platform becomes a part of the new software. The plans were published today.
-- There is a possibility that we may have a different type of activity instead, "said Carina Dietmans.
Managing director Johan Sandberg and Personnel Lotta Hauffman is expected to outline details of the decision this afternoon. When will the future of UIQ Technology in Ronneby be discussed.
The company develops software for mobile phones and is owned today by Sony Ericsson and Motorola."

One thing that is clear is that Nokia were and still are doing more than great with their OS while SE was/is struggling and confused. Let's be honest and fair, SE has been going backwards in terms of UIQ. I for one am not saying Nokia wasn't thinking of its own behind in this announcement but they certainly were in a much better position than SE and Motorola. Even Motorola had started concentrating on Linux more than UIQ which says a lot about UIQ's state. After reading about this some more I'm really looking forward to the new platform.

True, nokia saved se, all se had released was a bug ridden P990, followed by outdated P1, in past 2 to 3 years and then the cancelled the much hyped paris for longer than 6months and the beibei which never saw the limelight.
