No it's true I don't look back, only forward.......apart from occasional nostalgia when I see my lady using my old P910....a P910 running UIQ3.3 - ah what a joy that would be - oh how I miss the 5way jogdial.....sigh |

buy one and never look back
Yeah, you'll always look forward - for the next fw update

Thats cool then, hopefully i'll be able to text and e-mail easily. Would you say the navigation system is intuitive? (I'm a UIQ newbie).
There's probably more different opinions on that one. It's simplistic and effective in my opinion. The problem is lack of functions, and some of the SE custom menus that suddenly won't use certain input you'd expect. For example, the arrows should do skip forward and backwards in the month/week calendar view - but they don't. So suddenly you have a similar- looking menu compared to every other leaf- menu, but without the convenient controls. Same with the media- player - why shouldn't there be stop/pause/skip functions on the keyboard when you have the media- player open? And that one can apparently be fixed by just putting the scancodes into the skin- definition - because there's hooks there for the jog- dial and any other key already.
So not to discourage you, or anything *cough* - but none of these extremely simple fixes have been taken care of by SE so far, almost a year after the phone hit the shelves. And they're not responding in any meaningful way to their customers - through support, or officially - and by all accounts not unofficially either. In fact, we don't even know if the tennis- sponsors know the damned bugs and serious lacks exist. If I'm right, we're going to see the bugs again on the new g- series, but we'll have to wait and see about that, of course.
But basically, you're stuck with these things, and they won't be fixed - ever. So try the phone - and if you really think you can use the functions it has - and that this will outweigh the negatives and the absence of support from SE - then sure.. it's a good phone.. Probably even the best smartphone available (as long as you don't own a mobile power- plant, and don't mind the phone rebooting at least a couple of times a week, and so on). But that's just because of the sad state the smartphone market is in right now...
edit:@@myth: lol. Right.

I've had mine since October '07, and I'm liking it.
Pros:
Looks smart
Large-ish screen
Decent built in email support
WiFi
Qwerty (once you get used to it)
Customisable easily (see replacing MBM's and Fonts)
Runs TomTom
Cons:
Can be a bit chuggy, even on latest fw. Worst is accessing a new SMS from the alert, goes through all the Messaging app screens s l o w l y :|
WiFi is B only, and sometimes doesn't seem to pick up settings via DHCP
Built in browser seems slow to me, even over wifi.
Overall I'm happy with it. I think I'd perhaps go WM next as I do some .net development already and I like the idea of writing apps for it; I've never really gotten round to learning Java or the Symbian stuff properly. If MS would port the .NET Compact Framework to UIQ I'd be happy

my take on it, it is a great phone in fact the phone itself has not given me problems unless i do something stupid with it or to it, but then it is my fault.
This is my first smartphone, first SE and first UIQ so i was starting fron scratch in any case i've found it fairly easy to use from the get go, a few of the advanced functions needed the manual but on the whole it is an easy phone to use.
I agreee sometimes the menus are a little bit mixed up, and i do not like that but on the whole again using my finger to navigate almost all menus i've found it to be generally fairly usable.
As for emails and texts, i've been writing essays on mine and i've found the phone a joy to use, although after about an hour i need a break to give my thumbs a rest.
Again with the firmware updates, i dont know much about the situation at SE because of this being my first UIQ however i will say that many users do find it annoying problems are not being fixed and more bugs keep cropping up. Ultimately i think if you are a power user you may feel disappointed, if you are new to the whole scene you'll see it as the best thing since sliced bread.
I fall in the middle somewhere, i'm new to smartphones and so it was nice to having a pocket PC but at the same time i'm a fairly heavy user of most functions so while there is a learning curve for me, i like to think i've made good use of all functions and ultimately it isn't a bad all round phone. Again some of the advanced features i may not use e.g. activsync.
I think it is stable enough for day to day use as a normal phone with a decent battery life (getting about 3 days out of mine) and when needed it packs a decent camera and video recorder, with the added bonus of email, music, documents etc...
Couple things i would watch out for as mentioned by some members creaky case, green tint, and the fact the SE chargers are a bit crappy...
Hope that helps. |

Great phone I must say... Someone once said it looks like an old casio calculator and it's not far form the truth. Very good build, the trimming on the speaker makes creaks tho. Keyboard is great, makes you want write mails on it:) Little sluggish, hopefully new fw will resolve this. Great modem also, I'm using it for past few days on the laptop for surfing... And no green tint, camera works a charm. There is only one bug with it, when you change the focus mode it doesn't change the icon on the screen.. All in all, great phone...

I've had the M600i before it and I love the Sony P1i. There are a few features I'd like that are missing, but I'm not under the delusion that the perfect phone is out there. I have come to terms with the weaknesses of the P1i and the positives far outweigh the negatives.
To me the keyboard alone is a stroke of genius. They've gotten it so right in that aspect that it's hard to fathom that there aren't more companies that have adopted this layout.
Another thing that often gets overlooked is just how sturdy that bugger is. I have dropped it more often than I can count, and despite all the abuse it keeps chugging along and still looks presentable.
I just hope that they keep the line going, would be a shame if they abandoned that platform.

I think the only I am slightly worried about is navigating without a d-pad, but i guess the jog wheel must work well, i just don't want to have to be getting the stylus out all the time to do stuff.

trust me, i have quite fat fingers (man hands) but i can access most if not all functions without the stylus. The only time i might use the stylus is if i am playing a game or if i am browsing the web. For day to day things fingers galore it is.
If you are really worried, give it a try in the phone shop. Do keep in mind though over time you learn the little bits and bobs that allow you to do things without using fingers.

Be aware though that it only works from the standby screen, but you canget back to this by doing the same thing, so in affect, if you have an app open then just do the long press twice
Sorry @all back on topic now
