If you're concerned about voltages, then just look at the labels on the chargers themselves to see if the output matches. Also check the curent delivery - measured in 'ma' against the one you're replacing. If it's equal or higher on the replacement, then thats ok, but if it's lower then this might cause the replacement charger to be overrun/cause it to heat up eccessively/possibly burn out.

@chlee
Unless the pins are arcing inside the socket (easily observed by scorch marks on the charger's pins), I can't see how this can cause an issue, particularly due to the fact that he'll probably move it to another socket on the same ring main.

well i moved the charger to a socket on another floor of the house so it isn't the socket

I might look in trying to get my grubby hands on a k800 charger, my mate just upgraded to a viewty so his k800 is no longer being used. Other then that i'll just wiggle teh cable about until it decides to charge.

On the plus side i'm just happy it isn't the phone that is at fault.

@AD

I got a w810i charger here, which is model number CST-60, the p1 has a CST-70 model number, just compared the numbers:

CST-60:

Input: 100-240VAC~70mA 50-60Hz
Output: 4.9VDC === 450 mA

the CST-70 on the other hand:

Input: 100-240V ~ 50-60Hz 150mA
Output: 4.9V === 700mA

Now i'm no electrician but they dont seem to be delivering the same power, it would seem that the CST-60 is lower powered and therefore no good for the p1 from what you stated above. Could you just please clarify that for me. Thanks

Since i now also have the p1 charger model number, i guess the SE website will tell me what otehr phones use it, and i can track one down if i know someone with a phone using that charger.

You are correct, the replacement charger isn't up to the job unfortunately - it may well work for a while as safety tollerances are built into any electronic components, but I fear it would fail eventually.

EDIT: Just noticed the input current - double for the P1's charger - I wouldn't even bother trying!!

ok thanks, funnily though if you log onto SE's website and search for the CST-60 charger under the compatible phones section they list the p1 there.

I sure this just means "the p1 will connect / work with the charger" as opposed to "the CST-60 can be used in the long run as a replacement for the p1's original charger"

Hmmm - interesting, it could be that the management of the charging process (within the phone) is cleverer than I'd supposed, and that the CST-60 would be fine, just slower. Without explicit information though, it's impossible to tell.

I still think the safest bet is to get a replacement CST-70......

Ok back to the top this topic goes, this post is really aimed at AD but i'm also curious on other peoples inputs.

When i was charging the phone today (charger was behaving itself) i noticed a buzzing sort of sound emitting from the charger (the unit that plugs into the mains) it sounded as if the wire was shorting. The sound wasn't loud it was a slight buzzing that i noticed only because i dropped a pen next to the charger unit.

I will stress the point the sound was very very quiet it is as if there was a short, and also i will point out that the sound only occured when the charger was pluged into the device with the mains switched on.

As soon as i unplugged the device the buzzing stopped even though the mains power switch was on.

I contacted SE, they said to send it to they repair centre, which i'll do when i get a backup charger. But i just want to know if anyone else has noticed a buzzing sound emitting from their charger?

Hi there

All transformers will have a certain amount of vibration when in use, if it was a continuous low buzz then I really don't think it's too much to be concerned about. If however the noise was stuttering (Idon't know how better to put it), then this would indicate a fault of an electrical nature.

The sound is caused by the fact that mains electricity is in the form of alternating current at 50hz (cycles per seccond - within the human range of hearing). In a transformer, this causes a rapidly fluctuaiting magnetic field, which causes a kinetic vibrational effect within the components of the unit. As to why the sound stops when you unplug your phone, I believe this is due to the fact that no energy is then being drawn through the system, or it could be that what you're hearing is the rectifier (the bit that converts AC to DC), which would definately be inactive if the circuit to the phone was broken.

Now it could be that this effect is more pronounced because something is loose inside the casing, but if it doesn't rattle at all if you shake it, then it's probably fine.

Hi there, thanks for the reply well i had a little shake around with the charger and everything seemed fine there was no rattling sound from the unit, so it could very well be as you said the fact the charger is operating, and there was no stuttering, it was a continuous buzz.

I'm not that annoyed at the charger messing up actually i mean £10 aint a big deal but the fact that it did so within 7 or so months is a bit annoying, and the thing that concerns me more than anything is the prolonged use of it could either damage the phone or worse if indeed it is faulty. Ah well weekend's on the way, will go into town and pick up a charger i think then get this one replaced on warrenty.
