It's known to be only a temporary fix...... 
Lack of airflow inside the systems' casing(great design, M$) literally overheats one of the main chips causing it to warp, which then loses connection with the main board it's mounted against...... 
There are now numerous third party brackets available which remount the chip, and hold it connected by sheer strength(~an hour's work to fit)...just a pain it wasn't designed properly in the first place......

Lee ans aware, i think you reading wrong guys,
he's trying to give the console a ring of death he has a dodgy dvd drive n thats not covered by the extended warranty by microsucks and so if he gets 3 red's they will fix it, unless they spying in us in here lol

Shouldn't you check to see if Microshaft will repair it free first anyway? They might...

my mate did this to fix the red rings, if you want to acut them you need to do it standing the xbox up

EDIT: Did call Microsoft and they said no free repair, but before I begin re toasting it I might call phone support and just flip at them and see what I can get. Not like sweary stuff, just be a very annoyed customer ... Which i am.
