@kenobi
Thanks for the tip, that's definitely worth considering. I think you were maybe a little unlucky though since I've had many Dells in the workshop for repair over the years but the vast majority of them were for software problems or failed hard drives, so nothing unusual there...
I won't bother with the warranty personally because, knowing me, I'll be wanting to upgrade to a new laptop after a year anyway!
@JC
Again, thanks for letting us know. I went for a Inspiron because, according to the user reviews I read (not on the Dell site!), the latest ones are pretty well built and have been problem free.
So it's fingers crossed then because it's too late for me now!

@ leeboy, I have called every Dell SC; USA, EMEA, CHINA for the XPS screen. Closest I could get is send in UK SC and have it replaced (I am in China now) or purchase from a retalier in UK for 750 Pounds?! shipment included. Mind you, LCD is most expensive component of a computer..
And I was not the only one at the time:

EDIT: the link is no longer active Anyway, ther was around 600 ppl just for XPS series... then 9400 if I'm correct.. Any IT manager will tell you Dell is s**t. But you can go for it, just take the extended warranty, it's cheaper:)

@ Cyco, good to know I have a bad luck I paid for 9200 1500E and after less than a year XPS for 2400 E. Talking about 'High end computer"
I said to myself, even tho I like Dell, I will look not to buy one. You are not much affected, cause you are in UK, but I am every year in a different county, computer is vital for my work and if something vital starts to fail, it can only cost me large sum of money. That;s why for me way no Dell. |

One thing more, sorry if i bother much... As I found then, it was not Dell's fault for the screens.
Even tho, they were responsible. In USA they had t replaced no matter you have warranty or no, for UK was a little problem. Some got it replaced for free, some not.
There were two brands of LCDs that they had installed on 2005/06 series laptop. One was SAMSUNG and the faulty one was LG-Philips. |

I suggest an Asus C90s, very good laptop, 15inch screen, 1680x1050 native res, 2.3ghz i believe, desktop cpu, fully upgradable, first of its kind. Sells in Sweden for about 1200 euros, thats 900pounds i think? |

Yes you get both then, i've not known one person who has regretted switching over. Go to your local apple store and have a go of one before deciding and speak to them about using your design software there really good and will help you out. There so simple to use.

TBH I was going to mention Mac's as a lot of designers do tend to use them!
But check the availability of the software you are likely to run on it first!
You don't want to be having to shell out loads on new software just to be mac compatible!
EDIT: or run windoze on the mac
