Imo the price with significantly drop in generations to come once they lower the cost to themselves they can pass on the discounts to customers like they done with the ipod.

the prices is high because in their eyes its a new very innovative product, the iphone doesn't have many phone functions like a smart phone but these can be solved with software update but even if they don't they do have basic phone functions of simplicity for most users, come back to the ipod it a good and reasonable price but it doesn't do as much as other competitors such as the creative range which has radio and divx playback built in, but still i bought a ipod for the convince as all my music is in itunes on my imac and pc and i assume it the same for millions of others due to sales of ipod. this generation of ipod classic is very low compared to competitors a 80gb video ipod for £159 originally the third generation was £219 for 20gb.

if they sold a sim free iphone at slight higher prices than the ipod touch sales would be enormous, but this would screw up their ipod sales.

You mean lack of friction? That's for a problem for men. Women on the other hand just want a phone that can be put in silent mode.

You forget us living in developing countries where EDGE is still state of the art.

Funny thing, the Iphone is a great device in America, being a country where cell phone technology is still 2-3 years behind. Moreover companies control the people, by offering discounts and locking them into contracts.

I see people still walking around with big old motorola, nokia and LG phones and kids tout them around as having the coolest little things cos they play video, or have a camera. So for them, a slim & stylish iPhone is "huge". Not the same with other countries that already have great technology around.

People used to good technology know what to look for and expect in a device, while the rest will only look at its appeal/fashion statement. So the former will look for features, ease of use and functionality while the latter can easily be won over with a cool and nifty UI (like scrolling with a finger.) In fact, when they first got it, everyone was showing off the cool flicking finger thing. That's what the ads glorified too.

All that aside, it does what it can do well, and will certainly get better, in keeping with Apple's reputation. But with current pricing and lack of features, I'll wait. I wish consumers would learn to wait, this would teach mobile networks not to dictate the market. But, oh well, every rich kid in the world must have an iPhone or they're not cool in 6th grade!!!

Technically speaking the iphone is not a smartphone, its supposed to be a multimedia phone, but even at that its still lacking in that departmnt compared to other multimedia phones out there in the market. So most Europeans are not very impressed, hence the low sales compared to the US.

to be honest i think its failed because of the price point. iPhone witha crappy contract, no 3G and it costs £270 up front?

You can get an N95 with 1000's of minutes, unlimited data and walk out of the shop paying nothing.

Yep ... it all comes down to Price tag Vs. Features .
IPhone is overpriced for the features it has and the only innovating thing is the multi-tough screen.

Looking at the features, and looking at the competitors i think IPhone is worth 300/400 Euros (USD 450/600; GBP 215/290).

I think this article puts it nicely:

The iPhone Mostly Fails In The UK, New Poll Reveals

According to the numbers issued by GfK NOP, 75% of the participants to the survey have heard about the Apple phone. However, 72% said that the price was actually too high and, therefore, the iPhone would not make their Christmas lists.

In fact, the percentage of people actually eager to buy the device barely rose to 2%.

"Apple’s history proves that it has the magic touch when it comes to product development and marketing, however the iPhone has yet to capture the imagination of the UK public. iPhone hype is in full-force, but our data shows that it is very much a considered purchase, with its high price turning many consumers off. We must take into account that the UK mobile market’s success has been down to subsidised handsets, therefore the iPhone’s price really stands out and consumers are not used to paying in excess of £200 for a phone," (Richard Jameson, GfK NOP).

In addition, Jameson pointed out that "the mobile phone manufacturers have very strong brand loyalty. Apple needs more than cutting–edge design to penetrate this market and will have to work much harder in the UK than it did in the US to make iPhone a mass-market proposition."

500 people across the UK have participated to the poll.

The simplest reason why so many of you are cursin iphone is bcoz u cnt own one tho u wish u could aye, but since u cnt so u prefer to critisize it. End of topic :) im anyways happy with any phone which supports gprs coz thats all i need not thousand of features on it or to show off in front of friends or colleagues at work.

^^ On the contrary, I want the iPhone to do really well as it will make other more established OEMs think about what the market actually wants.
