Its probable that the File Allocation Table (data structures?) will be bigger because there will be more clusters available on the larger media, but lets remember that this only impacts the writing of the files initially.

reading the files will have minimal impact because the FAT points to every cluster on the card and access is very quick (<1ms) due to its solid state nature

I've read stories of impacted performance as larger cards come available but as someone who has always bought every larger size as they come available (I have an 8gb M2 and micro SDHC on their way even now) I can say I have not noticed any lag of any kind

I would suppose that if you have many many small files it could possibly have some impact or if you had very large cluster size but in general we tend to store 4-8mb music files and 100+mb movie files on these cards and perhaps 100 <1mb images so that all balances out in reality I think

Hi Dogmann,

Unfortunately, I have no idea how the size of the microSD card would affect the hardware or firmware architecture of the phone. However, as I said although perhaps I wasn't absolutely clear, dealing with twice the data maybe sufficient to reduce the performance of the phone, in terms of both its hardware and firmware, to make it much less performant and adversely impact the usability of the phone to such a degree that Sony advises against their use.

Sony won't want people ringing them up saying that their phone is crawling because of 8GB data cards. Instead, they advise no more than 4GB and if people want to try 8GB, they're on their own. It's probably fair enough.

8GB will work but will cause the phone to slow down under certain circumstances which will adversely affect the user experience so it's up to the user to decide whether this is a problem for them.

Cheers,

jahman

just to clarify, thats not what they said according to your earlier post.

You said that their response was that the K850 is compatible up to 4gb, which is difference from them advising not to use more than 4gb.

It has always been SE's way to only advise compatibility on what is currently available and I suspect that is all they are doing here as 8gb M2 and micro SDHC are only just starting to be available this month

When I get mine I'll certainly do some comparisons with my 4gb M2 and micro SDHC cards and I'll report back

i agree with you masseur. when k750 was released in 2005, it was advertised that it can hold upto 1 gig of mspd (which is what is available back then) now 2gigs mspd and 4 gigs mspd are available. and these mspd's are perfectly compatible with k750.

Well, actually it is. They say it supports up to 4GB, i.e. the corollary is that iit does not support 8GB. Of course, we know that people have used 8GB microSD cards in the K850i but with not entirely satisfactory results.

I don't know why you think that's not what they said according to my earlier post but there you go. Perhaps you could explain further?

You said that their response was that the K850 is compatible up to 4gb, which is difference from them advising not to use more than 4gb.

They said it supports up to 4GB which implies that as far as Sony is concerned it does not support 8GB, i.e. they do not wish to support people attempting to use 8GB cards in the K850i.

It has always been SE's way to only advise compatibility on what is currently available and I suspect that is all they are doing here as 8gb M2 and micro SDHC are only just starting to be available this month

But the 8GB cards are available and I specifically asked about them. The answer has come back stating that Sony only supports up to 4GB in the K850i.

I'll be interested to hear your experiences.

jahman

Hi all.
I've just put an 8gb MicroSD in my K850 to no avail.

My laptop was not registering it and, upon checking my "phone status", the phone isn't recognising it.

From the posts on here, it should work. Any suggestions to get this working please???!!!

Hang on, so are you guys saying that microSD and M2 (memory stick micro) are interchangeable on all SE phones that support the M2? or does the K850 support both?

Excuse my ignorance but I got confused!

There is one card slot, but you can use either M2 or MicroSD cards in it...except my 8GB SD is not working!

Help!

Further update...

I've tried my 8GB MicroSD in a mate's Nokia N95 and it works fine.

Therefore, it appears that the K850 doesn't support it...unless someone out there knows how to get it working...?

Hi Guys,

Hate to butt in but. I've got a 6GB SanDisk MicroSDHC in my SE K850i and it works absolutely fine. I worked fine out of the box. I didn't need to format or anything. I've copied 2.5GB of mp3s on it and in use it seems to run as quick as the 512mb M2 that came with the phone. Although in media player directory listings are slower. I believe that is a known bug.

If the 8GB MicroSDHC doesn't work in your laptop I'd suggest that you try another reader. Eg the inbuilt one in my Fujitsu Siemens laptop cannot handle MicroSDHC cards. However the card performs fine with the SanDisk MicroMate USB reader than came with my card.

Hope that helps...

Cheers,

Norm

Cheers for your post Norm.

Many apologies, as I should have made it clear that my laptop didn't detect the 8GB card when I tried to transfer music to it (i.e. the card was in my phone and the phone was linked to the laptop, via the transfer cable).

I realise now that I should also have mentioned that the card is one that was supplied with a Nokia N95. As I understand, this is likely to have GPS maps loaded onto it that are, presumably, specifically for the N95 - I am guessing that this is a likely cause of the problem???

I am no expert (you guessed that already, right?) but I presume that I will need to remove this software and/or reformat the card to get it to work?

Only problem there is that I don't currently have the means to do it, as the card didn't come with an adaptor or reader!

What do you think...am I on the right track???
