how do you know we don't need the moon?
As to blowing it up, no danger of that happening. All the nukes on earth wouldn't have a hope of blowing up the moon, or even nudging it out of orbit. We are not talking an asteroid a-la Armegeddon you know, the moon is a mighty large object - nukes would barely scratch the surface. Look at Hiroshima - more damage was done by the firestorm created than the actual explosion itself.
Now if you did manage to blow up the moon, we'd be really screwed. The debris would rain down on Earth for months. Some chunks would be large enough to wipe out cities, some possibly even large enough to punch the Earth out of it's orbit enough to cause a winter so cold all life would be wiped out within weeks. The atmosphere could be burnt away from the firestorms created by the massive amount of debris falling on the Earth.
Personally I think blowing up the Moon would be an extinction level event
