These are all very good suggestions. I'll add mine;
1. Be honest, but don't speak ill of yourself.
2. Ask them questions about things they are interested in. They will talk back and try to help.
3. When they talk, listen to them very carefully.
4. As they are talking, don't keep constant eye contact as it may irritate people, but don't just look around as if you're bored and looking for a way out.
5. Don't make fun of people's dreams, even if it seems meaningless for you. Remember, your friend is sharing his/her biggest most important stuff with you.
6. Try to be straightforward, i mean, don't resort to allusions. I'm not saying be rude, just be clear on what you mean.
