I guess it's SW related. When you did a master reset did you start with a clean system or kept the old settings and programs? Cuz mine restarts now after a master reset cuz I kept all the stuff from before.
Once you do a clean master reset and re-install all the apps I guess you'll be fine.

I don't think it's software because as I said, the SIM card is very loose and the phone doesn't restart, it just switches off I have nothing installed on it at all other than the default stuff, just a few ringtones and wallpapers stored on the memory stick.

The 'jamming a bit of paper between the battery and SIM card' method seems to be working so far so it might actually be a bad battery connection as already suggested. Normally, the phone switches itself off every night and at least once during the day, but so far it's been behaving itself.

Thanks everyone!

@Cycovision, my P990 is also about a year old and I recently had it replaced by SE due to a power problem.
What happened in my case was that the battery consumption became 3 times what it used to be, the battery would drain at about 10% / hour. I exchanged batteries with a friend and verified that it was not battery or charger related. It took SE a bit longer to verify
My suggestion is, if you can, give it a try with another SIM card and a battery and if the problem persists take it to a SE service center to most likely have it replaced by a new P990.
P990i: A mistake, a curse and a disgrace So I lowered my expectations and settled for a P1i. I couldn't keep my expectations so low for a long time so now I have an HTC Touch HD

Thanks for the tip!

It was doing the same thing with a different SIM but I haven't been able to try a different battery yet.

However.... It's been two nights now and it's not switched itself off! Looking good, but I'm not going to say the problem has been solved yet If it stays on over the weekend I think we can safely say we've cracked it so fingers crossed!
