What is wrong with the "W" music quality? |

@dogman,
totally agree, of course
but it's a SE-forum - considering that, there are surprisingly many who agree with us (I find some nokia-forums a lot less tolerant, to be honest)

You are right 90% of the people here will say that but that doesn't make them right. Many here unfortunately are blinded by an SE badge and just believe they must be the best.
But just look on this forum for how many threads there are about low volume or hissing and some of this on top of the range Walkman phones. IMO Walkman is little more than an interface and and marketing that's it.
Recently i looked at both the W950 and W880 neither unfortunately impressed me enough to buy them. Although Nokia don't market the N93 or E61 as Music phones they both have more than enough volume @40-50% and enough power to run a set of Shure EC2 headphones and sorry if people don't like that but it happens to be the truth. They also have preset and user definable equaliser settings and are in a different league to Walkman phones. The only thing they don't have is the fancy Walkman branding but there is just no contest IMO.
They also don't need modding either as pointed out if you need to mod it to get good results that does suggest that as it comes out of the box it is lacking.

Unfortunately, there's something quite wrong with (at least some) W phones including the flagship models. After upgrading from my first ever mobile phone T100 to W850i, I expected crystal clear Walkman sound. Instead I got hissing at the end of every song and crackling between them. The crackling issue was solved after a firmware update but the hiss remains.
I gather that at least some W850 and W880 users have encountered this. Maybe it's just a faulty lot and obviously SE does not intend to do anything about it... This made me buy a pair of clip headphones just to escape the hiss which is audible in quiet environments. When there's some noise either indoors or outdoors the HPM 70 will do. Therefore my W series audio experience is a bit lacklustre. Otherwise, the phone is quite good, apart from the lack of autofocus

oops... I just though I had a deja vu - but actually realise this has all been
talked to de*th in the ipod v. walkman phone thread... I still experience nightmares about that (even dreamt I was called bad words... tssk)

well, i didn't test much phones music capabilities but i've got bad experience about my se m600's music quality. this is the first phone what i use everyday to listen to music, i put away my creative mp3 player and i use only the phone. the difference is huge, i hear through the headset that the phone is hissing when i stop the music. this weas shocking for the first time.
I hope that the w950's got better quality, if not why do they put the walkman brand on it? well, if i hardly remember my old sony walkman's (you know the portable casette player) sound quality, maybe it was the same. When will these phones be real portable music players? |

@4cc,
I never had the hissing in my M600 just not good enough sound even with the HBH-DS-970. The reason they brand them Walkman is marketing and to sell more.

IMHO the only Walkman that worth mentioned is the W900....the sound is just superb...and i dont mean just the bass that everybody is talking about...the mid and high frequency ranges are superb...again that is MY opinion and i listened to all W range phones...

@ alexander87 : you are very right dude
The W900i has amazing sound quality and after audio tests it showed just 0.003% THD.Its way ahead the other Walkmans but you should consider that the others are low/low-mid/mid/mid-hi end phones,NOT hi-ends.Don't expect perfect quality with them,even with the W850i.Some of you already know that the W850i was a very old elaboration of SE(thats why when it came it had ms pro duo instead of m2 memory slot).But I'll have to mention that I'm an audiophile and don't totally like any of the walkman brand,even form the Sony dedicated players.Sony is a mass market producer and can't afford to put the best parts in its production,the prices will go uuuuuP .I am not totally pleased even with my W950i when I listen to it at home where its very quiet.Nokia N91 has a better audio reproduction in terms of power and mid-high frequencies,but I won't ever buy it.And I'll explain why.I need a good player when I'm outdoors,not a perfect one.Its a brick.And I won't sacrifice battery life or etc. for just a bit more quality which I hardly hear on the street,so I stick to SE(with mid-hi volume it delivers decent sound).Look at my rigs: I use the "light" one(I hadn't enough space to put it in my signature - W950i+Koss Portapro)most of the time and the "heavy" one when I am traveling.The "light" one's sense is to deliver optimal quality together with a compact size.The other is aiming at perfect quality.But I don't take it all the time because its not so portable,though with a better sound reproduction than many people have ever heard in their lives.So I use Archos instead of Walkman simply because Archos players are better sounding due to he implementation of chips from Texas Instruments.My point is,Walkman will NEVER reach Archos,for example,but sometimes we have to do compromises.The best music phones are those with DSP and they are quite few now - N91 and soon 5700,but my next phone will DEFINITELY be Maria - it will have DSP too as well as noise canceling,so its getting closer to the Archos,little by little
Don't expect a phone for 300$ to be perfect - it has not more than 5$ invested in music reproduction.Together with the shitty HPMs and 128kb/s mp4 it sounds even worse.Get some decent phone with DSP and lots of memory(at least 4gb),good portable headphones(Sennheiser PX100/Koss Portapro(WOW,how can they sound so LOOUD without an amp ) are my choice) and extract your music not in mp3/mp4/wma or etc,but in WAV directly from the CD.If you want to go deeper,buy(or DIY ) a headphone amplifier,it will significantly increase the quality and power but will take your other pocket too

As you people have already pointed out, W series is no more than marketing a different interface. And ever since SE split the product range into half to force a choice between Cybershot and Walkman, namely, crippled photo shooting or crippled music player, i have next to no sypathy left. And i don't even wanna mention the "Walkman HissŪ". |

lol,don't say bad things for SE imaging
it is the best I've seen so far,and only Sharp can beat it,but Sharps are not that popular in Europe - they are japan-styled bulky ones(I'm talking for the european releases - they are very much alike the Japanese Sharps)

This is my opinion.
I will give score to SE and Nokia on range 1-10. I will give you some simple scoring about quality of SE and Nokia.
Nokia = 6
SE(standard) = 8
SE(mod) =9,5
So...the point is...modding its mean to get more...more...more...better quality(although the original standard box have GOOD QUALITY,of course kick ass the Nokia quality ) |
