@kwabs2006
UMTS is 3G (3rg Generation
GSM is 2G (2nd Generation
The Next part of UMTS/3G is Called HSDPA (This is 3.5G UTMS)
This can run currenlty at about 1.8mbs However by the end of the year this should be about 3.6mbs and by next year 7.2mbs.
Normal 3G runs at 384kbps
Edge is 2.95G. (Edge is an extension of GPRS) (237kbs)
However Edge has been adopted in the US and 3G has only just started to happen. Most of the world went straight to 3G.
Orange in the UK is the only network to have Edge
This is how the line up works
GSM > GPRS > EDGE > UMTS(3G) > HSDPA
@GSM Puritan
You will be pleased to know tat 3G does work in USA.
Cingular uses 3G
However the reason for the delay was down to the networks.
The problem is that US was original going a different was in regarding Technology that he rest of the World, However US is on catch up and catch up you have done.
However again US have different ways of using mobiles / Cell phones that Europe etc.
US likes to chat, Europe likes to SMS / MMS.
US use the mobile for Push to Talk and Web and Browse.
Europe is only just getting Push to Talk (PTT) and so far its a flop, Regarding our Wap usage the networks are now only start to push more.
Hope this help (Happy new year to every one)

I whish there would be a "Use 3G only" additional to "Use GSM only" and "Use GSM or 3G". Because the 3G coverage here is almost as good as GSM. So that would increase battery time considerably.
