what country are you from? here in nz, the consumer gaurentees act allows for a reasonable amount of time (after the warranty) that the retailer is obliged to offer a repair or replacement. this time frame is determined by what is considered a "reasonable" amount of time for the good to live...you might have something like that available to you...

Yep, having worked and (working) for UK tech support, I can second that. But the "reasonable" period could vary from one brand to another ranging from 2 days to 15 maybe...

May be a daft suggestion but are u sure its a mechanical fault and not some fancy swichy lighty offy virus?? I dont use a laptop so have nothing to play with to look around for a poss cure, do u not have a manual with it or a HP website that may give u a clue as to what could be the cause. Lot of money to spend on a repair if its something simple.

Called up my PC guy to tell him that its working fine and need not send anyone to take it for repair...he was amazed, said thats the first time he is hearing something like this. Now he wants to know how i did it

@i,Robit ,i am sure its some mech fault as theres no virus attack in my laptop(is there any such virus out there??what if i was using a desktop with the old cathode ray tube??...only the backlight went out not the screen...i could still surf by projecting a tablelamp on to the screen).i registered a complaint with Hp India yesterday early in the morning...requesting for 'Active Chat' assistance...also gave my email id...but havent heard from them yet.i didnt check the manual either (now i got to search for it...i never use a manual coz it ruins the surprise of finding things)

There is something loose inside your pc, that happened to my Toshiba Satellite a few years ago and one day it fell off my desk and everything worked fine after that. Im not saying "throw your computer to the floor!" just check inside to see if any wire is loose.

i agree it is a mech problem.
A virus? Highly unlikely but not totally impossible.
@thug get the connections checked. Btw i find it very amusing that you used a lamp to read the screen reminds me of a guy who suggested to watch tv by the light of a candle, when i was a kid
