You definitely can't draw conclusions from the outer labels only.....you got to dig deeper to differentiate an original from the dupe.
Anyway, original vs dupe isn't an issue here - AFAIK, even many of the owners of the Original headsets complain of poor quality.
Interestingly I've tested 5-6 original HPM-70 headsets from my friends' W550s and W800s, and i'm yet to see a HPM-70 that gives poor quality sound.

I got some black ones on eBay and I don't think they sound very good. Actually, the HBH-DS970 sounds much better. Maybe all the black ones are counterfeit? What's the best way to tell? Actually, they look pretty authentic to me. |

I bought my first silver HPM-70's from eBay about twoo weeks ago. At first I thought they looked very authentic (came in plastic bag, complete with separate bag for spare rubbers, little green tag like in happykhans picture, print on the plastic bags and so on...), but after a very close look I concluded that they where fake. The main give away was that the Walkman-print on the microphone unit was a bit wobbly. But I guess there are MANY different HPM 70-knockoffs, so just because your suspected fakes have the print error-free doesn't necessarily mean that they are authentic.
The eBay vendor has agreed to give me a refund if I return the phones. Still, watch out for digital_zquare!
I will post some pictures later.
By the way, how many of you got a neckband with your HPM-70's?

I just bought my HPM-70's from them yesterday!
The picture from ebay they posted:

Yep, that's the same seller. They used the same picture, anyway. The headset I received differed from the picture posted in several ways:
1) The picture shows a pearl white HPM-70, but the phones they are selling are silver.
2) The 3.5mm connector is different. Mine has 2 full rings around it, the one on the picture has 2 fat wedges.
3) The wiggly joint between the 3.5mm connector and the wire is different. Mine is ment to bend in 2 ways, the one in the picture only flexes one way.
4) The little plastic tube between the silver and grey main earpiece housing is cut with an angle on the picture. Mine is straight.
So, the picture shows an authentic, pearl white HPM-70. You will receive a fake silver one. Try to return it.
Sorry to break the bad news for you

After several test l made I decided that I will only use the 3.5mm plug of my HPM 70s rather than the whole thing. Now I am using the original headphones of my Ipod which seem to make a better job for me. For best results i can recommend headphones which are big enough to completely cover your ears.

Looks like the 0xWxx in the bottom left of the little green tag is the year & week of manufacture. The ones I got say 06W11 and have a high serial number (>1,000,000). I make that half way through March. It seems to fit in with the serials on others posted here.
