"high-quality".....i guess they are refering it to SONY'S Walkman not SE's....they are jst telling how popular the WALKMAN brand was even before it came to SE.....

its shit quality music if you ask me. my w800i background hiss when listening to mp3s is unacceptable and ruins everything. what an embarassment to the walkman series. even a cheap mp3 player is heaps better in regards to music quality.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't know why so many people are slating the SE phones for poor sound quality?
I have the W810i my brother has the W800i and my wife has the W900i! Not one of these phones has any hissing or poor quality sound during audio playback?
Maybe there are a select few out there that may need reaplcing? But in my / our experiences they seem to be pretty much flawless.
We have all got the SE speakers also and OMG is the sound quality so good on them it's unbeleivable.

We have now received an answer and this will not be fixed for the W800i since this is an issue regarding an earlier update to prevent digital distortion.
...
As in previous message this hissing sound is because of a fix which prevents digital distortion.
This fix have increased the background noise and will unfortunately not be fixed.

|
Now, if people still claim their W800i's don't produce any hissing noise, then there's only three possible explanations:
1. Their W800s are running R1L002;
2. They play their music on loud volume that drowns the hissing noise;
3. Their ears aren't sensitive enough. |

"High-quality"? Yeah, right.
Whenever I hear "Walkman" now, I can't help but be reminded of a "hissy" noisy music playback.
I don't know if that's what SE meant by "high quality".

ive used a whole load of different w800s and w800is, and ive never heard hissing noises on any of them, i had one perswon come to me with a hissing noise problem and it was fixed by a firmware upgrade - and how the hell can you call a minority of one device an entire series when its maybe one batch of w800is that have a hissing noise when god knows how many million have been shipped and theres 10 phones in the brand series so far
and have you guys not heard an ipod?

The W800 is one of the 10 Walkman phones and not to mention the first one. Can the same hissing be found in the 9 other Walkman phones as well?

I fit to the number 3 category
My ear is not as sensitive so I have no complain. I know I can hear hissing when there's call being made since the frequency or noise when you are talking to someone is less.
So do you think I will dislike the product? No.
Because can you get something in the market now which give you a camera, a phone, a music player...a video player (thought nothing to shout aabout) and a simple game player all in one package?
Oh yeah you got Nokia N91 which is like a big piece of brick....so get on with you life and enjoy what you get.
I just owned a W550 which maybe have hissing sound but it does satisfy me. I was on a trip from Malaysia to New york recently....Walkman phone become my companion when I am bored with the in flight entertainment.
It totally make sense why walkman phone is needed....now if only they start making more function to be available when we are in flight mode....I do like to see we can use camera, play game, write SMS (so can send once you touch down) look into your schedule, watch video etc etc. |

only a small percentage of w800's that have the offending firmware have the hissing problem. It is a very small base of users with the hissing problem - so it is not a global problem, it is not a fault of the quality of music reproduction per se - it is a slight fault on a small number of handsets to do with firmware and not hardware.
If you complain loudly enough you could get a replacement phone without any hissing. Alternatively you could update it yourself with the far manger hack to any firmware you want, for free. I know it's not ideal, but you simply CANNOT brand the W800 globally as a "poor quality music device".
Obviously SE don't care because they know it is only a small base of users with the problem.

^what is that far manger hack? thanks
http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=119082&start=75
^thats not enough people? theres stacks of people with this problem, and plus people dont bother to update their firmware so no hiss for the others. SE has admitted to this hiss, proof is there for those who wish not to believe. most annoying mp3 player ever and deserves to be burned because it holds the WALKMAN brand.

1. My W800 is running R1BC002
2. I play music at low vilume while using the HPM-70 earphones.
3. I am not deaf - ok, my ears are sensitive enough to every minute sound.
And my W800 has no such issues - is it 'coz it's a K750>>>W800 job?

when only 10 or 20 or at max 100 ppl mostly Esato member complain but the rest of 3 million walkman phone user not complaining
do you think SE will spend the resources to fix or investigate why hissing happen?
some of us here might be working in real world.
think about resource need to be spend....time....money
to get something only a minority is complaining.
i guess the only thing which make a company to really work onto it is like the iPOD nano guy....first create a blog tht make a big buzz on it...then go to lawsuit.
but then his problem is really messy with broken window or scratch window. |

3 million people using specificly SE w800i? hell no, thats enough people to occupy a country, no where close so dont exaggerate. Check other forums and you see esato isn't the only site which has many people who complain about the hiss. this is just one of many threads on howard
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=888898&page=2
i guess its alright for phones like the s700i etc to have the hiss but not a walkman music phone okay. the majority havn't updated their firmware and many aint audiophiles. just cause they think it can play music doesn't mean its quality music. go search other forums and you see this is a global problem and serious.
if its that minor then we can just all send our mobile in and get a replacement with no hiss and go home and drink champaigne but it doesn't work like that. why would so many complain about this bad quality music even after sending their phone in. What you are saying just tells me SE has extremely poor customer service and dont give a dam shit about the little people.

oh ya...3 million walkman phone
when did i said w800 ??
I said walkman phone which include w550, w600, w800, w900 which is what comprise of the 3million phone SonyEricsson shipped in 2005 according to their report. Remember that those figure need to get it out from Gartner or other research firm...of course to me I can't tell you what is the figure those research firm given because all this report need a few thousand bucks to obtain.
But do you think a big company dare to make such figure fake..because the whole industry is monitoring what the other is doing.
So don't say it is I who exaggerated it or SE...because tht's what they said in the statement in the developer site.
3 million and growing ... but even when we have ppl here in esato, or in howard's forum or even in mobile review forum or in NSE forum or in bengalboys.com forum or mobileburn.com forum combine, do we have all walkman user agreeing this? Some are saying it is not a problem while some are.
I am one of them who say it is not because I just can't hear it.
My advice is...if you feel SonyEricsson is not giving something you want...why not doing it the way that fella did to Apple when his Ipod nano didn't get replace. Go take some action. I am not going to take the action since I am ok with it.
Even every forum have complain...the total number I will stay say not close to a big number. As I said...each corporate need to justify whether the defect is justifiable....of course if it is something fatal like phone blowing up...even one complain...they will look into it.
But if you feel like one or two comment to the service centre don't give a good respond to them.
Create a new thread.
Compile the name and info of all the people who feel annoyed by the hissing sound and send it over to Sonyericsson...don't send to any service centre as red tape might have the info gone. Send it directly to the London HQ.
There's always a solution for something....remember when you bend one chop stick..it breaks...when you have a dozen of chop stick in your hand...it will not be easy to break.
Now it is the choice for those who dislike the hissing noise whether they should gather a big petition and mail it to sonyericsson.
I guess the moderators might be happy enough to setup search thread...or maybe they can even get a online vote and have the survey result exposed to SonyERicsson.
IF you feel SonyEricsson is bluffing on the 3 million walkman phone
out in market thing. Pls take action on them for bluffing too
To me I believe tht coz SE walkman phone is a common site in most of those dynamic mobile phone market in Asia. Remember that SonyEricsson shipped like 50million phone in 2005 and 3 million is still a very small number to them..worst to the whole world...it is nothing in term of three million
Phone is not only shipping to Europe....it also ship to Asia and America.
China have more than 100million phone user since 2yrs ago while India is reaching 100million this yr. The overall market for SonyEricsson is small as you notice in this figures.

oh okay, sorry i thought you ment the w800i only ><. great advice c,
i liked that symbolising using the chopsticks NICE!!
However is no longer a big problem for me now, so i might drop protesting and escaculating it any further. The hack i used has signifcantly decreased the hiss all thanks to hackers going out of their way to fix this problem for us little people and no thanks to SE. Spread that hack around and no more probz hack is at the subforum software.
cheers and less dissing from me as problem is declared SOLVED. my thanks to people on esato.
