I am in favour for the suggestion posted by Jim where everyone can add news, but that they have to be confirmed by a news editor before they are listed on the front page.

Now, I see alot of forums working with a "back page news" section on the forum, it means that anybody can post a news and "news mods" are making the decission if it's worth the frontpage or not. Even if it's not really worth frontpage it stays on that particular forum so anybody can read it anyway.
That way anybody can participate in the news section of the site whitout having special rights.

Copyright is an issue. It is not possible to cut-n-past from articles found somewhere on the web. axxxr tried this in the begining and it did not take long before the owners contacted me and asked me to remove the articles. Press releases spiced with comments are of course legal. |

currently, posting news items, as seen on the front page, involves two steps.
The first is creating the content, including pictures and words, but this is not yet visible on the front page.
The second step is to actually publish it so that it is visible.
I suspect general members will be granted access to do the first while the approval and ability to publish will remain with a restricted few

Example on how it works on neowin.net, it's an open forum for news articles where anyone can post an article (with guidelines to follow) and there are "news moderator" that puts the article on the front page if it's worth it, if not well it just stay there for the amusement of all |
