@englishmanabroad: you should be able to switch off 3g in the 'Settings/Connectivity/Mobile Networks' menu on the phone.....
@mrvanx
Vodafone added 3G to my account over the phone; O2 told me I had to purchase a USIM to use the service |

Thanks! @Aware.
I will change the settings to switch off 3G- just thought that if I activated the new 3G SIM with O2 - it would deactivate my existing O2 SIM - I guess I should wait until the thing gets delivered

You should be able to use both 2G and
3G sims as long as you have the settings.

That is not much 3G coverage outside London.

If you activate the 3g sim it will deactivate your usual sim. You may be able to use your 3g sim in a non 3g phone |

You can use a 3G sim in a non-3g phone. I have done it. I use an O2 3G sim in a T68i

Cheers jcwhite_uk I was just about to make a post asking that. I'm after either a K800i or might wait until the P990i comes out and I wanted to know if I could use a o2 3G sim in say a K750i for the time being.
I have to first get a o2 3g sim from o2 you see. I have heard they dont give USIMS to prey pay customers unless you buy a 3g handset. I will be buying a handset sim free you see as I always do as it takes forever until decent handsets are out on pre-pay. Do you think I would have any trouble obtaining just a USIM from o2?
I see orange online give them just like that on prepay. I would like to keep my number too and would prefer to stick with o2. |

I'm not right bothered about 3G, I don't really see the point in all that video calling business, just fancied the K800 really. Just as well looking at that O2 coverage map, with me living out in the sticks!

If you go to http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtml
this list every 2g and 3 g network and maps for the world.
its a great place to compare.
Orange and three are both on there.
Hope this helps |

cool thanks..its a pretty interesting website!!
looks as though vodafone has the best signal then orange...3 looks the worst- surprising, considering they were the first to release it!!

Guys,
3's network runs on O2's network, so therefore, whatever coverage you have with 3 is the same as O2!
Cheers

Having looked again at O2 coverage map it appears that they are expanding the 3g network slowly. They are now showing 3G where I work but on within about 1 mile area. Where I work isnt exactly a large town (ringwood, hampshire) but the nearest large town (bournemouth) doesnt have 3g. Weird.

Looking at 02's own site for coverage. It lists :
High - Video Calls / News
Standard - Voice/SMS/MMS/ Music, O2 Active
I'm assuming standard is 2G, high is 3G
My home location is 2g only and the phone backs that up. At my parents house, which is also in a 2G area (and about 5 miles away) I consistently get the 3G icon displayed on my handset. How come? Both locations are nowhere near the nearest 'high' area.
