This is not a sony Ericsson special thing. Almost all phones do this.
Even when you type in the SIM PIN. If you type 911 or 112 it allows you to call this right there from the pin input box. |

Behind the battery, on the white sticker inside the phone, you will see a code (4th line above the barcode), for example 03W21. This means your phone was manufactured in week 21, 2003 |

Mobile network code. Normally 2 digits, depends on the network provider.
