Walkman brand doesn't guarantee music quality. Beware of buying SE W800. |

It is'nt a hissing noise exactly, its more like the sound when your speakers come on, a sort of slight buzz. Its present in most music players especially when using low quality music files. I see no drawback to this supposed "hiss", its present on my E398 too and on my Walkman casette players and on certain songs on my bros nano. |

I am not getting any hissing noise in the background on my new w800i.
I check it with soft music as well as loud music. I also check it with different settings of equalizer but really I didn't get any hissing noise. |

@deepsme,
I've been experiencing the hissing noise for all post-R1L002 firmwares that I've updated to: R1NA005, R1AA008, and R1BC002. |

Is it possible for you to go back to previous firmwares?

I can, but at the expense of other good changes that come with the latest firmware (better video recording, multiple character search in Contacts, faster UI, and other minor improvements).

I haven't noticed any constant hiss noise.
And when ever I notice some I just assume that it the song quality.
Maybe it because I haven't used any other mp3 players beside the PC and W800.
I never expect 100% clear music on mp3 since its compressed. But if some player gives 100% clear music then the W800 should have been made to give clear music too.
But anyways I don't think its that bad. I never had any noise problems with my w800.
I think some people over estimates these walkman phones. |

I do hear hissing while listening to mp3's. Really noticable when its a soft song. I only have a few mp3's. If i listen to the same song encoded at 300vbr aac, it's silent. Smooth and no issues. (NOT encoded from mp3 to aac. Direct to aac/m4a) |

Welll, I have to change my previous post ...
I never used the HPM-70 earphones and used some 25€ Sony earphones instead. I never experienced any hissing. Sound was christal clear. I recently bought Sony MDR-nx1 earphones and suddenly the hissing was present. The sound quality with these earphones is much better, but now the hissing is there! The hissing doesn't go away at high volumes, it's still there, you just can't hear it anymore. If you listen to a song with a silence break (or a song that fades out at the end), you can hear the hissing at high volumes too. I tried my HPM-70 earphones again and I can hear the hissing to (but not that loud). I tried all earphones with my NM-E99 Walkman and non of them produces any hissing at all, so the headphones are OK.
I am wondering if the hissing problem has anyting to do with the headphones that are used. (a different frequency responde, higher or lower impedance, higher sensitivity ...)
I was saving some money to buy 'shure' or 'ultimate ears' headphones, but I don't want to buy them if the W800i keeps hissing with them. You don't want to spend 250€ on top class earphones and then have to listen to a hissing Walkman ...

I had my W800i S/W updated from R1N035 to the R1AAOO8 and also still do exprience the "hissing/static/crackle" noise in the Walkman mode or hissing during a call but i don't really see that a big problem for me and won't consider to update the S/W to the newest R1BC002 as i am having no other problems with the phone at the moment. Nor do i use my phoen to listen to much MP3's either but if i do i just turn the volume higher so it drones out the hissing noise.
Regards,

Boy am I glad I found this place to vent!
I've been bugged about this problem since day one of my W600i purchase. SE says they've never heard of this problem in any of their phones, BS!
I'm also a bit peeved that there are folks who seem to think that the problem is with us and that we have no clue of sound quality or basic troubleshooting. Of course our MP3s are riped clean, of course we've tried them on other players, of course there is hiss...on some models and firmware. It's so bad you can even hear it through the built-in speakers. You can even hear it when the phone plays it's own sounds like camera shutter and alarms.
I've tried 4 new W600i phones in the period of 45 days, and I'll try more if every time I call SE they tell mie I have a defective phone.
SE needs to get off their collective butt and fix this! It is unacceptable to hear a "we will not fix this" response from them for a Walkman branded phone!
Why buy a Walkman phone when my kid's $15 Craig MP3 player sounds better?
Okay, I'm done. Time to calm down. |

im not satsified with the SE responds either they can suck a *** one! i had problems on my w550i and they only gave me short responds and then tells me to go to a service centre! wtf! what kind of service is that! we pay big bucks on SE and yet they can pay us back with a great service or responds?!
agree?

If music is more importantant than imaging then definitely keep your R1L002 firmware. Later w800i firmwares do have hissing noise in media player, especially audible at low volume levels. |
