A few remarks:

1. Upgrading firmware doesn't void my hardware warantee. It can't... I haven't altered the hardware of the T68. It does make the phone "unservicable" in case there are software problems, but my experience is that your friendly operator anyways doesn't service software problems. The best option you get in the US, is a swap of phones. Good luck to you in that case...

2. Unlocking is not illegal, nor a breach of contract. Although operators don't like you to do it without their permission, the phone you bought is YOURS and you can use it as you like. This includes unlocking, flushing it down the toilet, using it as a paperweight, etc. The fact that you may not have paid full price for it, was done as an incentive for you to sign a 1-year or 2-year contract with them. Early termination of your contract IS a breach of it, and there you normally have to pay a hefty Early Termination Fee.

I'd like you guys that think differently about this to convince me, by POINTING me to the paragraphs of my contract or the warantee agreement of my phone where it states otherwise. I couldn't find anything there... and even if it were there, I don't think it would hold up to legal scrutiny...

So I'm not sure why we can't discuss "unofficial" upgrades or unlocks?

Hello jnonhoffzieg,

I'm in California and, like everyone else here, am disappointed there is no service center here.

I will be going to HK next month and I understand there is one there. I sent them a note asking for firmware upgrade and was told that they have no international service agreement. Is this correct?

This is kind of bad. What if I decided to work in HK for an extended period of time.

Would anyone shed some light here?

Hey jnonhoffzieg,

Where in Newport Beach are you? I am 17 and I live in Dover Shores, I see that you are from Newport also and I was wondering what type of service you have. I have Cingular, and the quality of service is APALLING. I have to stand with my head against one of the windows in my house just to get one bar. I used to have Verizon, I think theyre the best reception in my area, but cdma just doesn't have the variety of phones and features that gsm does so i switched to cingular. just though id put in my two cents.

@sfaguy, sorry but for the life of me I can't figure out what or where HK is! If it is outside of North America then chances are you will be able to find a service center that will perform the upgrade. I'll try and help you find one but what country are we talking about?

@riverct033, I live in Park Newport and the reception is actually quite good here. But until about a week ago the GPRS was out in most of Newport Beach for quite a long time. Now that seems to be fixed. Just in time too, because I was this close to switching to AT&T. You might want to try AT&T's network to see if you get better reception in Dover Shores. Don't bother with T-Mobile though, because they are using Cingular's towers and won't be any better. Hopefully you won't have to give up GSM and your cool phone...

Wow I did not know that T-mobile was using cingular's towers... Good Info though. Let me tell you though that I live in Las Vegas and cingular has great service!! Im on At&t now And they SUCK!!!! it would be a big mistake to switch to them they tend to do everything WRONG! anyway I sent and E-mail to SE reguarding the matter and I haven't got a reply yet I included me address so hopefully they will send info. If I get anything I will be sure to come and post it here for you guys.

I just got my phone fixed by the service center in MN and they put on R5D007 - the T68i FW. I don't know if they do it standard now, I had it on there when I got it upgraded in Europe. I told them specifically that I use MMS and that I wanted that version - and they did.

hey jnonhoffzieg

you seem to know a lot about this stuff, any info on the good old p800 you might want to share with us? hum? hum?

i'm curious if we will be able to use all of the cool functions without being charged up the @ss for it, i've never really used a cell phone to a great extent but i'm totally ready to get a p800 and use it for everything. the pda and camera feature will be my bread and butter since i find my self quickly loosing brain cells to some of lifes little temptations.

Guys and gals, don't expect a lot if we will talk about the durability of p800. A friend of mine told me that they have the experience of using a prototype of the phone.... but it's not that perpect for market to sell like a hot cake....Because it saxxks!!!!! it hangs, it sometimes automatically shut off and the resolution .......well just wait and see it for your selves
