Don't be shy calling them as that is their job... just tell them you are testing the video call and let them pose for you.

I got to test a video call from Zamboanga (during my stay a few weeks ago) to my wife's N70 in Makati. It was pretty good.

there's no such thing as a 3g sim card. I've been using a very old sim card to make 3g calls and it works...sometimes.

smart 3g is definitely a gimmick right now. it takes somewhere between 3-10 tries before you can pull off a successful vid call. and if it does push through, most of the times the calls auto terminate after around 5 mins.

when the trial ends you will need to use a 3G sim card (USIM) to access the service. i believe the USIM is needed to manage the billing. the 5 min limit is probably also because it is a free trial and they don't want the system clogged up.
