@Blue
The main difference is that Symbian is an operating system. Just as a PC needs windows, linux etc. to work, smartphones need an operating system too.
Java is what's known as an 'embedded platform'. It's actually a program that runs under an operating system (like symbian) or, in the case of non-smartphones, is embedded into the firmware and it allows other programs, written in java, to run. It's a bit like an emulator.
Currently, only SE's P series of phones use Symbian UIQ OS

I have heard that 6680 has a better camera than a 750i. Is it true?

The comparative pix i've seen at gsmarena are rather convincing. Now, i haven't bothered looking at those taken by the 6680 mainly because taking pictures doesn't rate highly on my list of reasons for choosing Symbian, but i do know that as a rule SE take better pictures....

A better explanation would be to compare linux to Symbian - both are core operating systems (Symbian for mobile, in the last several years). Just as Linux has two main GUI (graphical user interfaces; Linux = KDE & Gnome) so to does Symbian = UIQ1/2/3 & Series60.
However since the GUI's are different, significantly so too are how apps made for them incompatible crossover wise. Now, when talking about compatibility of apps regarding the same GUI; Series60 for instance then I suggest looking over at this site.

Ya...that was quite an explanation...but what i wonder, is symbian here to stay? Will it take over java mobiles one day....or does it have major flaws..

Personally i don't think Symbian will replace Java coz there are always going to be lower-end phones and manufacturers who believe Java is the way to go. Only major gripe i have is that S60 is prone to virii coz of its popularity.

Thera are AV apps available for S60...much like AV programs available for Windows....but virii continue to be developed for S60 as for Windows ....In short...S60, much like Windows is a malware developers wet dream

Better drop my plans of putting my money for the 6680. Btw, are only symbian phones 'smart' phones?

I thought PalmOS cannot do multi-tasking. So how can it be smarter?
I would say new WM5 and Symbian are neck-to-neck in functionality. Only recently WM supports 3G but Symbian already have 3G support earlier. |
