I agree.

But globe and pldt doesn't offer pure gprs/edge. they offer wifi and dialup access as well.

cdma2000 1x and cdma2000 1x ev-do for mango and bagoong. err .. airnet, i mean.

"hotspot" usually means a WiFi access area. This means 802.11x, including bluetooth?

Smart "WiFi" / Meridian Wireless. Some are arguing that it's technically WiFi because 802.11b bridges are actually used to connect the user to the network.

The usual WiFi connection is user<->WiFi<->ISP but Smart/Meridan's setup is user<->Ethernet<->WiFi<->ISP .

So, yun.

SMS from landline phones has been available for several years now but it's not as popular as mobile phone based SMS.

Is America really lagging in technology? No, I don't think so. Baka sa mobiles lang.

yeah mobile/wireless mostly. some companies has EV-DO i think. The connection is fast as mobile video calls are possible. we have CDMA, TDMA, IDEN and GSM as well. stupid freq of 1900mhz tho. good thing cingular's 850mhz are working in some states. i havent seen my $1,100+ imate jasjar with full bars of signal.. that's how bad these s2pd 1900mhz is. don't get me wrong tho, voice quality is crisp.

"hotspot" usually means a WiFi access area. This means 802.11x, including bluetooth? ---- PWEDE if you can configure to surf the net. pati IR..

remember wifi is wireless fidelity

Smart "WiFi" / Meridian Wireless. Some are arguing that it's technically WiFi because 802.11b bridges are actually used to connect the user to the network.

The usual WiFi connection is user<->WiFi<->ISP but Smart/Meridan's setup is user<->Ethernet<->WiFi<->ISP .

PWEDE DIN

user<->wireless router (para wifi daw)<->ethernet<->OUTDOOR ANTENNAE<->smart cellsite equipt with meridian ek ek

rj.... commercial areas usually per hour for internet use. but there are many free/open for access.

voip... telecoms are offering.... cheaper rate, but i dont know about the quality

bluetooth falls under 802.15, Wireless PAN. WiFi are under 802.11 under Wireless LAN.

"hotspot" is not a technical standard, and therefore open to lots of interpretations, including bluetooth.

wireless routers use 802.11x, so it's indeed, wi-fi. having wireless modem/router with broadband connection is like having your own hotspot.

If indeed it does not have a technical standard then I can be considered to be a walking "hotspot"

@ rj

it would be nice (back home) if they have a City-wide free WiFi.

Does Pasadena have a city wide WiFi?

I agree US is behind on the cell phone technology (but not that much, 5 years maybe) but on the telecommunication side ( no offense).. WiFi, GPRS it’s a new trend but its on the bottom of the ladder when it comes to the real world of telecommunication technology.

Let me retract my assertion about US is behind 5 years with the cell phone technology. Actually were in the same boat, cell phone unit home grown in Silicone Valley HP6315 (HP6300 series) equipped with infrared, Bluetooth, WiFi with PDA & camera, capable of MP3 & Video player and Treo-650 almost the same bells & whistles.

Services:

GSM (SMS) first time I learned and used the service is way back on 1997
TXT to Email & Email to TXT, MMS, VCast

TDMA, CDMA

Bluetooth and WiFi (wireless technology) is been around for years, base on what I read here WiFi is being launch in PI.

GPRS/WAP Ethernet service, including corporate Email connection.

OnStar technology (GPS tracking, lock & unlock your vehicle, and if you don’t pay your monthly bills they can send a coded signal & disable your car)

It just happened the majority of cell phone users in the US are content as long as they can talked from point-A to point-B. Text messaging is not their first choice.

For some of us here, bluetooth and wifi are old in the Philippines.

GPS applications aren't popular but they are in use, mostly in corporate settings.

Unfortunately, tech toys are expensive. Most of us aren't like Mr. Walking Hotspot.

hehehe.

@dlreyes aka Mr. Walking Hotspot.
Have you picked up your unit na?
