I rather like Esato's simplicity. I like the fact that it has maintained its consistency over the years too. However, there are a few things that I don't like. I rather wish custom avatars were allowed, these can be restricted in terms of dimensions and files size. I would also like to see those hideous adverts removed, they are an absolute eyesore. If there needs to be advertising then fine, but does it have to be in the middle of posts?
Esato has developed its own look over the years and they should keep to that, although the odd tweak and there is obviously appropriate from time to time.

Like my grandmother use to say:
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
But I guess it would be cool if we could use our own little avatars.

The forums simplicity is one of its best features, makes it easier to read on small screents with slow internet (P9xx! + other phones).
As for the adverts - you try and run a site for free without em - if you clicked on the ads that are out of the way more (the ones on the right) then there wouldn't be need for the ones in the middle of all the posts. Create some money for the sites up-keep - click on a link before you navigate away! |

ok my turn. I feel there are possibly a couple of points of view.
first might be the appeal to new members. Sure, bright colourful sites might attract people but the fact that member join and people visit in the consistant high volumes that that they do suggests this is not a an important factor. Most people find Esato when looking for mobile content or answers to problems they have. You only have to google almost anything about sony ericsson to see how many threads pop up in the first page of results. If that is enough to bring them here then they find their answer or realise that by posting a question they will most likely get their answer. None of this really requires a colourful or good looking site, it just requires a functional site.
second is the appeal to existing members. once we're here and likely to be regular visitors/contributors/browsers then the smaller issues come into play such as personal avatars etc.
its a bit like if I visit a hotel for the night all I really want is a warm bed and a hot shower but in my house where I live all the time I want pictures and paintings, personal decorations etc
for me the first is obvisously fulfilled because I am still here after almost 3 years.
for the second, sure there could be a little more colour and various new features but the site serves its purpose and gets the job done.
laffen has written many extensions to the original forum capabilities and it would be alot of work to ensure those would be compatible with any new forum software
I really think Esato is an excellent place to visit and meet and help people and doesn't require too much fancy trimming

well said, extremely well said...
pictures in signatures make pages double as long, and must be hell for wap viewers, custom avatars sounds a good idea, but should they be of JUST phones? i dont know, this forum is for finding answers to your questions, talking and meeting new friends, and having a laugh, its not an art gallery craving attention. This is what makes esato what it is, its not just a cheesy forum for some new game thats just come out, if you see how many people have been helped, big or small, from a scratch, to the extent of someone having there phone mugged and members have helped them catch the criminal... this forum could change peoples lives, and we want maybe a smiley face in the corner? everything we want is right here
I rest my case

hehe, i like esato for a fact that , i can access it at my work place, like a normal site, if i were to go to a fancy forum, my whole screen would go up in various colours of contrasting blues, oranges and red, and not to mention the annoying pop ups...
i dont find that here @ esato, and can quite discreetly access it everyday....
so i would prefer it the way it is...

Did I see the main page texts in - BLUE color Maybe my monitor has a problem here. I just miss seeing the old-timers here . .. Oh well as they say, people come and . . . GO ! Beter leave everything here as it is, this was what we've seen here during our - DAY 1 in the forums till the time that we decided to go, and come back, and go and back again !

Esato seemed to be doing fine without them, but then perhaps the costs have simply risen too steeply.

Yes indeed, however, not only do we have the ad at the side now, but we also have ads slap bang in the middle of posts too! Perhaps if we promise to click the ads at the side the ones in the middle of posts can be removed?

One isn't supposed to prompt people to click on the as I believe. The ads work their own 'magic' to draw people in.

I am very happy with Esato the way it is.
I find Esato to be one of the most tidy forums on the net. Esay to navigate your way through and it looks clean and traquil. It's descreet enough to have up on your screen at work as well.
Changes and improvements are good to keep up with time but altering the layout would to me be a big No No.
Some other forums are litturaly blinding me with flashing, more or less macabre avatarts and signatures as big as my monitor. Ugly, noisy and distracting!

youre another damned patriot!
just because youre a mod doesnt mean you cant speak out mate.
its obvious, there are some updates needed here.
for gods sake, the phpbb available now is four years more advanced, ther are lots of features that esato is missing out on.
i do lik ethe simplicity, its not so much the design.
get rid of the ads
update some features
custom avatars
for example, features missing: poll features, getting to posts, navigation, my assistants etc.!
better links, i.e. onmouseovers and larger words
!
and esato is not the easiest forum to use. the search feature is limited and there are hundreds of repeated posts in the se general section.
i find se-nse a much easier place to be, because it is more structured, has better features and a more interesting design. sorry guys, but thats my view.
but hey laffen, well done getting us this far! im not knocking your work

All seems fine to me!
imho it's the content of a site that's important to me, I'd rather have a forum that might be a little blander looking but much better and interesting content and contributions that an all singing, all dancing forum with flashing lights and all the gizmos - when the content is either dull or plain crap! Also the plain and simple wap site is great for checking quickly when out and about with your mobile, loads quick and navigates quickly.
I'm not too bothered about custom AVs either, it's something I could take or leave, and it saves on bandwith anyway - even if a size limit was made.
The only thing I might perhaps say is change the colour scheme a bit - a slightly brighter colour perhaps instead of grey?
I'd rather see quality content than quality design, and I wouldn't cry too much if the design wasn't good, but would leave if the content was rubbish
