so?
are you forgeting aac files are way smaller than their mp3 equivalents???
hence if a 128kbs is better, slightly ot not, than a 128kbs, and plus itīs a smaller file, thereīs really no interest using mp3, except for the id tags (k750 doenīt read id tags from aac, yet)

i was not making any comparrisons to the size saving advantages of aac, musepack, or ogg vorbis over mp3. the comparrison was only about sound quality at the same bitrate. as that was the topic of the discussion.. |

I personally find some aac codecs better than others. FAAC vbr (variable bitrate) encoded tracks are AWESOME quality, but about the same size as mp3's of the same bitrate. For example a FAAC track encoded at 100, is not much smaller than a 128Kbps mp3. Bit comparing variable to non-variable bitrates is not the best comparison.
However 96Kbps FAAC abr (adaptive bitrate) tracks are about 75% the size of an mp3 of 128Kbps for very similar audio quality ( when I encode my existing 128Kbps mp3's to 96Kbps mp4's, I notice virtually no difference in audio quality. When encoded at 64Kbps quality is still very good, but the difference is noticeable. (I have only had problem's when re-encoding mp3 to mp4 when the original mp3 was ripped with a shitty encoder). However the file size of a FAAC 64Kbps mp4 is close to 50% the size of the mp3
iTunes mp4 encoding is less efficient, with a 64Kbps MP4 (M4a in itunes language) being about 75% the size of a 128Kbps mp3. The itunes and FAAC 64Kbps tracks are about equivelent audio quality, IMHO. So I would highly recommend the FAAC (I use dbpoweramp to encode) codec over the itunes version.

on K750/W800, you can use mp3, aac only. |

^ and amr, if you want to use a recording (or a recorded conversation hehehe) you did as ringtone.
max_wedge, would it yield the same results if you encoded your songs directly from cd to 96kpbs aac instead of from the 128 mp3s? or do you think it may even sound better than the mp3s? i have the old version of dbpoweramp, but it only gives the option to convert to lame, ogg vorbis and wave files. thanks |

when I record direct from cd to mp4 (say 96Kbps) the file size is actually slightly larger, and the quality slightly better, but not much.
Keep in mind a nicely ripped 128Kbps mp3 has enough audio info to sound just as good as a 96Kbps AAC. While there is a small advantage ripping direct from cd, if the original mp3 is good anyway, there isn't much point. dbpoweramp does an excellent job of transcoding.
However if the mp3 is poorly ripped (shitty codec or low bitrate) then obviously it won't get any better when ripped as an AAC. And if I want to rip 128Kbps AAC files, then I need atleast a 192Kbps MP3 or the original cd, for there to be any point in doing that.
Keep in mind my ear ain't that fussy. Some peeps would insist on ALWAYS ripping direct from CD (or cd quality wav) to get the maximum quality possible. Those peeps probably also code in atleast 192Kbps for MP3 and 128Kbps for AAC, if not higher.
So it comes down to personal preference to some extent.... |
