A further question: does anyone know about limitations on the maximum memory a particular phone model can handle?

There are OS-related design limitations; I've had SmartMedia card devices (non-phone) that could only handle up to 64MB and I only found out after buying some 128MB blanks - they couldn't be formatted or even recognised.

Is there anything like this with MemoryStick and SE phones?

1GB is actually 1024MB but when formatted no memory card actually has the full 1024mb.
