I do understand the topic, however forum members should not bring the Ipod with respect to the W800i. The fault the W800i( which is a first generation product and can be improved over time ) is that you cannot use Sonys online music service with it!! That was not a smart move by SE.

Interesting point but do you think that people will use the phone to actually download to their phones? I know that the Operators are hoping so, but I think the data prices are quite high, and the price point will actually be a deal killer.
That aside, the w800i is a nice idea but in my opinion a niche market device. Maybe something for people who can not be bothered to have a phone, camera, and music device as separates.

I never used the play now service and certainly wouldn't use any other direct download service offered on the phone preferring instead to buy CDs and transfer from there. Mind you I already have around 20gb of music on my hard drive from my collection of about 800 CDs back home in Sydney
I'm now permanantly using the headset part of my Sony MDR-EX71SL headset together with the bottom part of the HPM-70 that came with the W800 and the sound is far far superior through those but I'm still fairly confident my son will get the W800 at the end of this weeks trial by me and I'll revert to the K750

@Masseur Many people do not have the time to rip 800 plus CDs to HDD, so an online service dedicated to the W800i would have a good idea & put in place a standard for other phone companies to follow! I have a feeling that Nokia will launch such a service with the N91. SE should add WiFi to the W800i replacement!

So are the supplied headphones with the W800i inferior to the K750's? That does suprise me - i actually thing the K750's headphones are pretty good esp for low end freq, plenty of bass. Would have thought thou that the W800 would have better headphones.
So the verdict with the W800 so far is good, but it doesn't live up to the hype. |

Hey Masseur,
If you want a great set of headphones that will make almost anything sound good, go for a pair of Etymotic ER-6 or 6i's. I use them with my iPod. They have somewhere around -23 db of noise quieting. You can hear your heart pumping with them on. You hear only the music. They work great with iPaq's as well.
Price is an issue, about $120 dollars but this is a bargain for great headphones.

We all know the W800i has an equalizer for enhancing the sound of our favorite MP3's albeit only a 5 band one, But why oh why did SE not make this feature available in radio mode as this is where it really needs the extra depth.

wel SE Cannot copy the menu attributes of the iPod as its patented. A mechanism to use a user interface can be improved upon better than the jog wheel, but it took 3+ years to do it even though the ipod was late to the game. Sony should and do better as they created the walkman/portable music business! It may be due to not allowing enough time to fully test the user interface with a pilot group of users for a few months. I expect a revision in about 3months time. |

I know bad headphones can ruin the sound but I wonder how much can a great headphone improve the quality of the sound? I would of thought it depended on the player as well |

Of course it does, but the difference between some headphones is amazing. The Sony headphones that came with my Sony Walkman seemed pretty good until i bought some new ones. I couldnt believe how much richer the sound was, and the dramatic amount of extra bass some headphones can produce.
I got my hands on a W800i yesterday. I have to say i was impressed by the phone, and its Walkman media player. However, the lack of the activities menu let it down for me, as did the Walkman controls. I thought the joystick directions were a little fiddly - i prefer the K750i's joystick control.
The build quality of the phone seemed very high though.

Is it possible to put the phone in "flightmode" without restarting it? I cant find a way to?
Hopefully they will implement that in new FW!

how much better is the w800 than the k750i in terms of music playback?
i have the k750i and am happy with it. i just wanted to know if there were any major boosts in the w800. i simply play my songs randomly.
thanks,

Interesting question. It depends on what your needs are. I have a z800 and an iPod. I carry them both. I have used the z800 as a .mp3 player a few times. The sound quality is okay, but I noticed that I love having my high-end audiophile headphones and the ability to just hit the random button and have my iPod pick one of several thousands of songs.
On the other hand, if I am making a quick dash into town, I take the phone. In the end it comes down to what you really want to do. If you get an iPod, I would recommend, spending another say, $100 to $200 on headphones (get the in-ear canal types that block all sound), and you will see that the w800 can not compete.
