15 reasons Facebook may be worth $15bn

Microsoft has invested $240m (117m) in social networking site Facebook in exchange for a 1.6% share of the company. That puts a value of $15bn (7.3bn) on a firm that has only been in existence three and a half years.

So why does Microsoft think Facebook is worth $15bn? Here are 15 possible reasons....

1. The network has gone viral in the last 12 months, with more than 50 million users worldwide and a user base that is growing faster than great rival MySpace. According to Facebook, it adds 200,000 new users each day.

2. The average user spends 3.5 hours a month on Facebook - more than the average user on rival MySpace - which is increasingly attractive to advertisers.

3. Facebook is the current Web 2.0 darling - popular with ordinary users and "tech heads" alike.

4. US research reveals that Facebook users come from wealthier homes and are more likely to attend college than MySpace users - increasing that attraction for advertisers.

5. Microsoft's investment makes them a serious player in the growing market of "social advertising". Social network profiles are full of personal data that users voluntarily hand over, which is very useful for targeting adverts.

6. Sixty percent of Facebook users are outside of the US - so Microsoft's investment buys access to a global audience quickly and simply.

7. Facebook is the new web: The decision to open up the network to outside developers turned Facebook into a destination for many uses, like messaging, photos and video. Of course, as Facebook is on the web it could never really be the new web.

8. Every major content firm with an online presence is either working on a Facebook application or has already launched one - from Google to the BBC.

9. According to a report, 233 million hours of work are lost each month in the UK due to staff looking at social networks. Advertisers can now target people when at their desks.

10. The openness of Facebook is attracting a wealth of talented developers who can launch their applications to millions of users quickly.

11. Facebook messaging is the new e-mail. Everyone feels stressed from a deluge of e-mail from unwanted people and companies. But Facebook messages are always from friends.

12. Facebook's "status updates" have become the easiest way to let friends know what you are doing and how you are feeling at any given moment.

13. Facebook thrives on playful applications such as Pirates, Zombies, Super Wall and Top Friends, which have made the network a place to play as well as communicate.

14. Facebook is the acceptable face of blogging - you can reflect your life and personality online without being seen as a "blogger", which often carries a geeky stigma.

15. Facebook is worth $15bn only because Microsoft says so. The value of Facebook is based on a 1.6% share of the firm being worth the $240m Microsoft paid for it. Microsoft and Google were in a bidding war for a slice of the firm and both companies have large pockets. This was not just business, this was personal, according to some analysts.

Thats sounds good, i actualy prefer Facebook over MySpace, because most of my current friends and old friends have Facebook and not MySpace and also because on Facebook its your friends, people you actualy know whereas MySpace its random people from all over the place who you don't know mostly.
FINALY finishd packing thing i hate about flying is that you have to pedlock your zips so that nothing is missing when you get to your destination, WTF!!? Last time i flew with friends when we got to East London my cricket bag had been basicaly torn appart and some of my stuff was missing.....

Wats up guys. Haven't been around these woods in ages. Been super busy with exams. Just completed my undergrad degree in medicine. Feels great. Been busy with lots of gadgets over the last week. Bought a nintendo wii with wii play, rayman, and fifa 08. It comes bundled with wii sports and it was so much fun to beat my 45 year old father-in-law in bowling. You guys should check it out. Really something for the whole family. Bought myself an ipod nano 8gb (1799 at dion wired stores if anyone's interested). Also a brilliant piece of kit. They've really tuned up the interface and the screen is excellent. Thinking of reccommending a w580 for my mum and a w910 for my dad. Voda have both available. Any comments.

@ Gucci,
Ya, those rat bikes and survival bikes get my creative juices flowing..

@ Jojo,

Found this when you were 'on the couch' with Cycovision earlier this year:

'Who are your favourite Esato members and why?

'...What I can just honestly say is that . . . you DON'T have permanent FRIENDS here at Esato, sooner or later . they will also BECOME your ENEMIES at the END (of the day) . . .'

And honestly mate, I hope that we can buck that trend if you feel that it's still a pertinent statement. As with the India thread, you are most welcome here.

@ Jits,
Good to see you again. Congrats on making such progress in your chosen profession.

@ Jojo,
Forgot to mention, thanks for that Kawa theme link. Unfortunately it's not for the P1i, but for the K800i.
It's a 2005 model, the one after mine, which was also the first ZX with an underseat exhaust.
Most of my phone themes come from Zedge too.

About the bikes, LOL at the moment I do indeed have more bikes than phones. I guess that's bound to change in the months ahead.

@pop - RE: that REPLY of mine at Cyco's Thread . . . it was just a WILD-guess made-reply . . . which I guess BOOMERANGed (karma) Thanks again for ADOPTing me here in the SA Thread. People from India were my FIRST group-friends in the Forum . . . but the thread is NOT that ACTIVE now as it was BEFORE and I find your DISCUSSIONS here veeeery interesting specially with regards to Big Bikes issues . . .

I am having DOUBTS about that Kawa-theme that I told you (zedge) . . . if it's really for your P1i. I am still looking for sites which have nice P990i themes though . ..

Have a NICE weekend to JUAN and WHOLE ! [addsig]

Yes indeed, the weekend is finally upon us

Quite a few years ago i was fortunate enough to be chosen *once and only once, mind you* to represent the province at snooker. One of my team-mates had a son who was absolutely nuts over bikes. Well, it seems as if his enthusiasm has paid off. He's just become the world's first darker-hued biker to clinch a SuperBike title

Seems any non-white is classified as 'black'? Mr Moodley is as SA Asian/Indian as they come. Very nice oke, met him at the EL race track back in 2000 during the Nationals.

@ Jojo,
It's a Suzuki acronym, which they use on most of their superbikes. It stands for Suzuki Ram Air Direct. It refers to the pressurised airbox intake system. As the bike goes faster, more air is forced and pressurised into the airbox (which gives them a delightful growling noise ) which in turn increases the air/fuel rate, making the bike gain a few more break horse power/KW, particularly at the top end of the rev spectrum.

@pop - Ohhhh . . . you very well your Suzuki-manual matey OK, but I guess that bike has to be the same as the ones they (Suzuki) are sellin' out in the market Or do they ONLY make like those in - races For what I know in Superbike races is that the minimum allowable Bike to participate should have at LEAST a 750 cc displacement (egine) SRADs are - 750cc, right or . . . to the LEFT, to the LEFT (Beyonce's - Irresponsible).
