Just seen a new app on my-symbian; "MumSMS+" to allow you to keep certain texts private.. all for a bargain USD$20!

I am shocked; how can anyone at Nokia, Samsung or Sony Ericsson think they can do anything to improve the sales of apps for S60 when the developers just don't have a clue.

Then there's the Energy Saver app that turns the phone off and on at set times to save power (rather like is standard on a BlackBerry). That's another $10 please!

When is S60 going to start offering developers the ability to sell apps for iPhone App Store prices, like $1 or $2, and allow people to make money in quantity? Despite the flaws with S60, there are clearly enough devices out there so the market already exists.

Just come back from looking at the Satio in the CPW.
Have to say I was very impressed with the live model I got to play with. The touch screen was far more responsive than I expected and inputting numbers and text was twice as fast as using the normal buttons on my K850i.

Having never seen a touch device before I thought it would be fiddly and hard to get used to, WRONG it was a doddle.
Been following this thread with anticipation since Idou was announced and after reading comments here I was starting to think I'd give Satio a miss BUT

For anyone considering it, you really must go and have a play with one and see for yourself.
I dont have a clue on the spec and know nothing about Symbian but from my complete novice eyes it was fast and very enjoyable to use, also felt a lot lighter than Aino which was my other choice.

Having played with both, I prefer Satio even with adapting to a different OS.
Only things I found with the one I looked at was the lens cover was smooth to open but perhaps a touch too easy and the silver looked cheaper than I expected.

The guy in CPW took a couple of snaps in store, just point and shoot and they looked awesome on screen.
Just need o2 to do this phone for similar money I pay now and then I will be able to join you here as an owner rather than observer.

@ Bonovox - what the hell does the Daily Mail know ? they're hardly T3 magazine huh !? lol

@ jmcomms - I have no Facebook or Twitter apps installed on my unbranded handset. But then they're not something i'd miss since i dont use twitter and only use the full Facebook site and wouldnt use an app to get live updates.

As for your comments on S60, they're very true. Now ive been a member on this site for several years like youself, but i dont recall whether you have owned a S60 device before. Compared to previous S60 phones the Satio's version is very good IMO. Ive had far worse problems with S60, and as for flashy interfaces and smooth transitions, they're not something i really care about. Those are things the iPhone is very good at but then is limited because of it (apple preferring flashy interfaces first, then secondly developing technological depth of hardware and software).

@ GUCCI.011 - ive tried such apps before but to be honest they didnt seem to make much difference to my phone, but then that was my N95 8gb with its huge amount of RAM. I never once had a memory issue with that phone.

@ MLAM - i have none of those problems. It might just be a faulty first batch of handsets like which is very often the case with most manufacturers handsets.

@ larry 68 - trust me you wont regret the purchase unless you're used to none-smartphones speedier interfaces.

And most of the SE accessories won't work with the Satio because - it may have the same port - but it's really not a normal SE phone.

To be honest, given that we're all going to micro USB, I can't understand why SE didn't use this on the Satio - and then include a 3.5mm headphone jack. There's really no point in having the connector if the accessories won't work!

The TV out cable would have worked fine via the headphone jack (or USB).

SE didn't use micro USD or the 3.5mm headphone jack for a very same reason they have changed storage media 5 times money! SE can claim licensing fees on all items made to fit "their" devices, used to be innovators, now the best they can come up with is an overpriced Nokia 5800 with a 12mp carbuncle stuck on the back! Just save yourself the money buy the Nokia 5800 it will do everything this overpriced turkey will.
I have owned the ... T68i T610, P800, P900, P910, P990, W950, P1, W960 But SE have now totally lost the plot.

Hmmm will keep an eye on the camera.

Anyway, another issue, does anyone know how I can get the Youtube app to work with 3G/Wap? I'm on o2 contract.

Also Opera Mini works fine when I'm at home using WiFi but it doesn't seem to work when I'm not at home and using WAP/3G.

Any help on those 2 issues?

Thanks

I've used S60 since it was first launched back in 2001 - I was with Nokia when they launched it.

I've seen the platform develop into something pretty top notch on non-touchscreen devices, and seen how Symbian (and Nokia) ruined it for touchscreen.

It doesn't need Symbian using their show next week to talk up the next generation OS, but to sit down and work QUICKLY at fixing current problems.

Nokia has already improved its own email client; now that must be given to ALL Symbian developers.

The contacts app is really odd in that it has this silly ABCDE search feature, instead of QWERTY, and it's slow.

Sending an SMS should have the conversation app as part of it; and you should at the very least be able to see recently used contacts, as every time you send a message you have to go through loads of hassle.

The web browser needs to be scrapped and started over; maybe just give Opera money to build Opera Mobile 9 (or 10) for S60 and have done with. The Satio does have an extra settings page where you can change the default apps for web etc - but you can't select Opera Mini, but that is a step in the right direction.

When I took photos recently in a basement, I had no coverage, so with geotagging enabled, the camera kept stopping as I was asked to select a new connection. In the end, I couldn't take a photo until I went into settings and turned the GPS off. No other phone would do this; it simply wouldn't get a GPS fix!

When I've opened the web browser in another app, I'm told there are too many connections open - with no option to quit one. Again, this means instead of doing what I want to do, I am having to go and drop a connection or quit the app and start over. That just sucks.

When you turn predictive text on/off and other things in the OS, you get too many confirmation dialogues that you can't skip - and must wait to go off. How frustrating is that, especially when you need to turn T9 off so often because it seems to be a rather poor implementation of T9, compared to the fully compliant versions on other SE handsets.

When you disconnect the headset or wireless headphones, the music just blasts out from the speaker. That and many other things are standard on Walkman phones, yet this is supposed to be beyond Walkman in the 'entertainment unlimited' category. Good as the media player is, it lacks many of the additional Walkman player features.

...the list could go on... I've already mentioned the silly cost for apps which is stopping people from adding anything on to the standard stuff in the phone.

What gets me is that the OS could be made a 100 times better with fairly minimal work; and if Symbian doesn't do this they can forget about there being a brand new Symbian Foundation OS in the next 12 months. Android will have taken over. Every last developer besides Nokia will have quit, and Symbian will probably go bust if Nokia has had any sense to embrace Maemo and - quite possibly - bite the bullet and support Android too.

Gee, the 5800 was overpriced too when Nokia launched it.

How naive is Symbian? That's about all I can say!

Android will kill Symbian if they don't do something to fix things NOW. Don't just let Nokia give N97 users a big update; look to your other licensees because you don't have many, and I am sure that Samsung is not going to make another Symbian device anytime soon.

Seems they axed a lot of apps; Facebook, Twitter, the driving game someone mentioned and I'm also pretty sure I heard it was going to ship with a copy of Prince of Persia too.

In fact, game wise, it has Cafe Sodoku! Wow!

Okay, so pre-installed content does add to the price; but it's not as if there are hundreds of games and apps to download separately.

I have for some time now been wondering what that "unlimited" part in "entertainment unlimited" actually represents. Let's look at the preloaded games: Sodoku and Labyrinth. Hardly mindblowing graphic experiences are they? What about the music player? That absent equalizer still amazes me. No possibility to fine tune your musical experience in a supposedly entertainment driven phone? Also, to my understanding S60 includes a generic eq. Was that scrapped altogether? Moving on to the video department. What - no native DivX support? Please hold for an hour, I just got to put that file through MediaGo to convert it to mp4, lets hope it will play afterwards. I really want to want Satio as my next phone, but to me the word "limited" somehow springs to mind.

Equalizer according to the satio blog should be incorporated in latter updates. No manual though. And i thought playnow arena had 100 games for download?

If SE got everything right 1st time, they wouldnt have anything to give us in the software updates and we'd have nothing to moan about lol
Imagine how boring it would be getting a perfect phone straight from the box
