There are a number of possibilities. The most common is when a file is downloaded but becomes corrupt right at the very end. Firefox and filesharing apps are buggers for this.

I found the best way is to download exactly the same file again i.e. use the same file name and have windows overwrite the corrupt one.

Then it'll let you delete it. Maybe...

Hi Cyco! Been using and still using an HP Pavillon with A 2.4Ghz process. Last week I bought myself a 2 Ghz Dell inspiron. Installed all programs and apps on my Dell that are on my HP. Basically they are both the same.

The strange thing is the Dell is faster than the higher speed HP. Is this normal? By the way, both processors are intel core duos.

Thanks.

It happens with everything. My mac, since January, I can feel it has slowed down a little.
Might do a format and fresh install of OS X when it hits the 6 month mark, y'know, to keep it all quick

Yes, I reckon it's most likely to do with the fact that the windows installation on the laptop is fresher than the one on the desktop too.

It could also be to do with the motherboard, hard drive, BIOS and memory. Does the laptop have faster memory than the desktop, since it's a bit newer?

Also, despite having a bit of a bad name amongst computer geeks, I've noticed that Dell have been building some pretty good machines lately that are highly optimised for Vista.

Thanks for your input guys.

@arien617

I've actually done that about two months ago

@Cyco

Sorry I didn't clarify, they boih are laptops. Yes, the Dell is quite impressive on roughly everything. It is built like a tank unlike the crappy build on the HP. If there's one aspect where the HP excels it is the screen resolution, simply staggering!

@Cyco

Just noticed that Service Pack 3 for XP has arrived. Should I bother?

"Windows® XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers’ experience with the operating system."

As far as I know XP SP3 is still at release candidate 2 and is still not officially released. I am running it and it seems ok, not had any problems but have also not noticed any difference.
I have read to day that SP3 release has been put back due to a bug.

It went to manufacturers on the 21st april. It was due for release on Auto update site from yesterday but has now been delayed due to a bug making it incompatible with Dynamics Retail Management System.
