Even if it's not going to be closely integrated with Honami, I don't think Sony would be stupid either to integrate the functions of this lens to other manufacturers only to compete with their own products at the end of the day. That'd be like giving their enemies a stone to throw back towards them. I think the accessory would integrate the xperia smartphones in a similar fashion as the Smartwatch 2 does though.

It's unlikely the lens is Sony Mobile, don't expect close integration with Honami. It'll probably work on it but Honami won't launch with it and it won't be the main selling point of the phone.
Honami is developed mainly by Sony's Camera division (I've mentioned it before). What I heard was it will be a co-launch under Sony brand, and they will slowly phase out the word Mobile so it doesn't separate out the sectors. |

It's something estabilished
Xperia, Walkman, Alphacam, Vaio, Bravia, Wega, Cybershot, Playstation... all known brand they will not vanish...
Maybe...maybe...maybe they could introduce a new brand a One Sony brand... but I highly doubt it

Flexible Battery Technology for Future Gadgets
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9QWD0haXtU
Taiwanese company Prologium is showing off a FLCB or Flexible Lithium-Ceramic Battery that can be burnt, cut, punctured and foldered all while still powering a device. We take a closer look at this technology in action. FLCB is the only one Lithium chemical system battery which adopts FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) as battery substrate in the world.

That would be a little disingenuous. The XZ wasn't the best phone this year (so far). |

I think Sony should allow it to work with the most widely used devices, iphone, Galaxy, and improve the image quality of these devices from current camera and camera app. Otherwise they can only hope to sell it to Xperia users that want a camera gadget, and this is too small of a market, will not make it for the people that stop buying cameras for smartphones.
Sony should also have some tricks in the xperia to make it work better with Honami/future xperia:
- smoother NFC integration when competition would be wifi/bluetooth app
- Use in the standard camera app when the competition would dl a sony cybershot app
- better image quality/speed than the competition with bionz chip
- better ergonomics and consistent design/look&feel.
This way you make people buy the Sony lens so they can get the most of their current phone, and then when they replace the phone, buy a xperia to get the most out of their lenses!
I like the idea
I think that the imaging team works on Honami hand in hand with the Xperia team, and i heard the xperia R&D is now merged with the VAIO R&D, so internally it is a much more visible and important partner to ltalk to for other divisions.

To all who say it will be so big and use a lot of battery: This lens actually has no processing power and the optics don't move. it's just a sensor and lense, nothing more.
how is it going to transfer images? it has to have cpu... but it doesnt have to have a lot of other things...
seems like nice accessory for those who might like it... it will certainly be available for every Android phone but probably be best integrated with Sony's. Lets not forget how Kaz is making them all work together. |

I don't think the Lens has its own ISP for JPEG processing, so it may use the Smartphone to do the pixel crunching instead. but this could be a blessing in disguise for Sony especially Honami, since it will come with BIONZ and a new JPEG engine that should do the work, and less components on the lens would reduce its overall cost and at the same time establish a lead among potential compatible phones from their competitors; phones like HTC One and Galaxy S4 may possibly be able to control the lens, but their own JPEG engine will not be optimized for this. so people will have to get Honami to be able to use the lens' true potential.

Very intrigued by this lens news. This may be enough to get me to use this in place of my RX100! I do wonder if the lenses built in battery can charge via the magnetic dock connector.
Also just a thought but what if they make this compatible with Z Ultra too, just like Honami?
Anyways if this has the same lens as the RX100 II and it can collapse in, then when not in use it would be a lot smaller than the one depicted in that photo. |

It connects to an NFC enabled smartphone, so Z Ultra should be on the equation, no love for iPhones though (they have no NFC )
