If SE could do this I would be really happy! Can't wait to get back to SE-land. I'm using a N78 now but for me TS is the way to go. Don't care about the camera but I would really like a big and good TS display. FM-radio is also a must for me. And no Windows please! Symbian or Android. I'll just have to hold my breath and hope.

Problem is - nobody wants a f**k**ng clone,
everybody will buy original anyway, which is still unbeatable in the most wanted department - UI.
You want to survive - make something original...

apple has but one competitor when it comes to UI, and that is WebOS.
If SE could deliver a WebOS type UI, with its style, it would be incredible.
Just a few more days to go... can't wait. |

I think the reason SE haven't already released a phone with an "iPhone form-factor" is because of Sony. Sony never like being called a copy (and usually are first anyway), and I think this has slowed them down.
A good example of this is Sony's reluctance to make a netbook because they "thought it unnecessary". But a little further down the track when netbook popularity exploded, Sony release the VAIO P. Almost identical size, almost identical specs, but guess what... Sony won't call it a netbook! This is likely to be an attempt to avoid being associated with what is essentially "the cheap laptop market" because Sony is known for its premium products. It also allows them to charge a much higher price without too many questions asked. However, the P has still been labeled a netbook by most of the media.
Back to the point though. If Sony (Ericsson) release a touch screen phone whose face is mostly screen - no matter how similar it is to the P800/P9** - it will be labeled by everyone as an "iPhone killer" or an "iPhone copy". I think this fact could be slowing them down.
However Sony have recently announced their NWZ-X1000 touch screen Walkman which can be labeled an iPod Touch competitor, so this could mean they are opening up to the idea. Maybe soon we will finally see what people are asking for!
*** I must stress that this is just something I thought of over lunch. Don't take it too seriously ***

Yep, the P series is a waste of time, yeah it looks nice, it's sexy, thin etc but it has less power then the Acer Aspire 1 in the base P model yet it costs over twice as much, it won't sell no where near as many due to that.
Look at the PS3, I have one, bloody love it, but they are STILL selling them at a loss as it cost them so much to develop, IMO if it didn't sell then Sony would be half or a third the size it is.
But it's not the same with it's phones, most of it's phones are the same value as it's competitors IMO.
And a touch screen smart phone device about 12mil thin with a 5mpx or more camera and a nice small 2.8 or 3 inch screen would be damn fantastic, sell by the bucket load and is what a lot of people want. To say it's not 'boring' is daft. You going to say the iPhone is 'boring'? Ask all the kids out there.

We are talking about Sonyericsson, not just Sony, but I think often Sony's unique (not to say crazy) ideas slow them down. So as SonyEricsson they shouldn't be like no other especially not in negative way.
And another think about that sony doesn't want to be called a copy: It would be far better a high-end breathtaking, and competitive phone, which could be called by some people copy, than unique and original, icompetitive weak phones. |
